MX5, potholes, decisions

Having serious thoughts about getting rid of my NA.

I dont drive it much any more due to such dreadful roads. When I do, I have a grin on my face but just feel like I’m totally watching out for potholes instead of enjoying the drive. My thoughts are that someone else might appreciate my car more than I am.

Waaaaa….. advice needed.
In the words of the Clash….Should it stay or should it go!

But you’d be watching out for potholes in any car?

May as well drive something fun.

True that. In any vehicle I’m watching out for potholes, debris and washouts of stones and gravel after rain.
if it hurts your back hitting anything go for Luxury shocks instead of sport.

Ahaaa. I didn’t know there was such a thing. Maybe that’s the answer

Is your car stock, or has it been modified? The smaller wheels with taller tyres and softer suspension of the original car was pretty good for rubbish roads.

I think you are being unreasonable. Do you think that with the paltry amount you pay for VED, Council tax and other general taxation you are entitled to decent, pothole-free roads?

You can buy a bag of stuff in B&Q for about £20 and a No.4 Widemouth shovel there too. Those of us who can’t afford to replace struts every month have been splitting the cost between us and fixing the worst holes on this streeet for years.
I can’t argue with the ones who refuse to contribute on principal but I do notice that they don’t swerve around the patches on that same principal

I believe it’s pretty much standard. Fed up with hitting my head on the roof though

Wow, £20 for a bag eh. That would get me smiling again!

Just one would be nice. Then I could drive up and down it all day grinning again

It’s also that I don’t want to damage my little treasure.

Silly really as my other car is loads more expensive but I don’t worry about that one

Just head across the channel, where you will find roads without holes, (providing you don’t go to Italy!)

So much time is spent looking out for hazards these days I understand your issue. It takes the fun out quite a bit. I remember a happier time when if you saw a big puddle on a road you would head for it and enjoy the splash, now you will avoid as its more than likely hiding a killer hole!

It’s a dilemma, but then I’m not sure any car is immune to the need to be alert to all the holes!

Human beings, my friend. I’d hazard a guess they don’t muck in a help you fill them either.

I would find a suspension specialist to check the setup and maybe change the springs for softer ones on the existing shocks.
B4s are just right on my BMW, B8s would be more comfortable and still work for those mad moments, B16s would probably bounce me off the road also there’s the bump stops, mounts etc to consider.
Probably worth letting a specialist help you choose and set them up right. You will find you will enjoy using the car more.

True. Fair play though people will always give you bottles of beer and one old dear who doesn’t even own a car brought me a roast dinner round.

Thank you. I didn’t realise there was so many options

Sounds like a bit of a silly reason to get rid of a car, specially an MX-5. Just keep an eye out for them.

I’d understand if you were talking about a Porsche GT3 RS with ridiculously low profile tires and that is super close to the ground.

But an NA has enough tire to take a pothole here and there. And worst case what, you need to fix or get a new wheel, possibly a tire?

Don’t let the potholes deprive you of your NA enjoyment!

Maybe also it’s the saddle not the horse.

Just spent 5hours constant in mine and can testify that they are definitely lacking a few layers of memory foam. Though on the plus side with my other cars Recaros it’s the left upper bolster that is too firm and needs less padding.
