MX5 prices rising?

I was having a browse at 2008 MX5 prices on EBay yesterday as I’m considering selling my car…

I was very surprised at how high prices are even though we’re in the best period of the year to sell.

Some of the cars looked pretty rough some had high miles some were poverty spec but nearly all were plenty of money.

The word in the motor trade is that older cars are in higher demand than they have been for years. Many who took on finance or PCPs are not doing so as they want to avoid monthly payments…

Anyone else noticed ?

Yes - I similarly have noticed the prices are very firm at the moment and compared to Parker"s used Guide prices are being listed at least 25% higher.

Good if one is looking to sell but you still need someone to come along and part with there money!

If you do decide to sell good luck.

Peter

Some bargains to be had

With the price of new MX-5’s significantly increasing due to new emission regulations at the start of 2020 - This increase fed through to the 2nd hand market for ND’s, and I’d think this would bolster prices overall for good used examples of all marks… The combination and hope of the end to lockdown and the arrival of spring and longer days can only be good… for us owners hoping to maintain some residuals…

September 2018 I was looking for a 2006ish NC. budget was around 2.7 k which got me choices of PRHT 2.0 Sports(which I bought) or soft tops for around 2.4K with 1.8 around 2.2K with around 100k mileage…looked recently to find I would now be struggling at these prices, looking like I could sell for a profit if I wanted to after two and a half years of ownership, but obviously my replacement would cost more.

I bought mine in October. She’s a 2013 1.8 with 41,000 on the clock, 1 owner and in mint condition. She cost £7.265. Obviously, it’ll be a bit more than that with the interest once she’s paid off but at least she’s mine after that. No way I’d ever want to sell her, even if I end up buying something else in the future. Don’t think I’d ever want to do PCP. My mum and best mate both have PCPs and to be honest, I can see the appeal but with an Five, there’s no way you’re not going to want to make some kind of mods, just like a bike. Honestly? I reckon I got a really fair deal

PCP’s can be never ending. I was lucky with my previous car - Settled the agreement with the car being worth at least a grand more, and sold it over a year later for just over settlement cost… I think everyone here just tries to find the best '5 they can, enjoy it and hopefully keep it…!

All praise to the ND buyers, keeping the NC prices up there

Mine was £4800, 57 plate sport, fsh, nice double din stereo, 2 previous owners and it’s the power hard top version, seems like a good deal, couldn’t see many to rival it for the same price on ebay and not really up for paying dealer premium as they just fob the warranty off to a third party and often they are cowboys in it only for the profit!

I think what happens
Many car get sold
Many get used a lot and end up with a hard life, they become cheaper to buy.
Many get written off, good bye.
Some get looked after very well, those ones should command a price because they are limited.

The choice is yours
Buy one with 145k on the clocks with shady history
Take your chances with a Cat S or N
Or put in the cash and get a decent one

I’m not trying to say a high mileage car is a bag of spanners, some are very well look after and some CAT cars have minimal damages and are repaired well and then some good looking low mileage vehicles could have hidden dangers.

This is exactly the reason I bought the 5, London too dangerous on 2 wheels, what can a buy that’s fun with plenty of aftermarket part options, just like a bike
5 it is.

Friends of mine in the (used) car trade are saying it started after lockdown one ended, and has just continued from there.
They’ve all said there’s limited stock and exceptionally high demand, which added to the prices of new cars increasing, along with a reduction in manufacturers incentives, and the economic outlook means many who would usually rent new cars are buying used.
This lot, added to the traditional rise in the prices of convertibles at this time of year explains the daft prices some old clunkers are commanding.
Great if you’re selling, not so good if you’re bargain hunting.

I bought my 2018 ND2 2L SatNav+ just after lockdown 1 for what looked like strong money… The fact that I saw it and had to have it was clear, and the price…, well that’s just the price… 8 months on and I haven’t regretted buying it one bit…! :joy:

It would seem my 2 year old 2.0 ND ST [184] would probably sell for £2K less than I payed for it (which wasn’t RRP).

We buy any etc… price is £5K less than the realistic current selling price.

I agree, and was in a similar position with my 30AE.
Prices for ostensibly very similar cars varied by a few £000, so it was simply a case of finding the best car I could, doing the best deal I could, then paying what I had to.
I was also worried about overpaying, however the fact there’s no longer any left for sale (there were six 30AE RF’s when I started considering one in early January) tells its own story.
So far so good. I’m enjoying my car, which for me is what it’s all about.

Webac prices have been all over the place since lockdown one. It’s a useful guide for mainstream volume stuff, not so for the more unusual and specialist cars.

I was about to make that comment, I currently have a Launch Edition RF and had my eye on a 30th Anniversary RF to replace it at some point but they have all disappeared!

I think the prices rising is also a symptom of the short supply we are currently seeing too, basic economics really.

I paid £8800 for my Sport Black in October 2019 with 40,000 miles on the clock. Looking on autotrader comparable cars are now selling for between £10,000 to £10,5000 so glad that I got it when I did. All second hand mx5s seem to have gone up quite a large amount.

When I found mine in “Ceramic”, I hadn’t seen one in this colour before… It’s not for everyone that colour, but I love it, and haven’t seen another in my spec and colour since… I also think now more people work from home and do less commuting, they are treating themselves… and why not… Covid-19, lockdown’s and all that prompted me…!

Yours does look good, helped by you keeping it so clean🙂.
Over the last year I think many people have realised how short life is and reassessed what’s important.

Thanks mate  Am a bit obsessed with cleaning it…! Just want to have the freedom to get out and drive… meet up with a few on here…

Exactly! The number of Five owners who are also bikers is quite funny. I’ve always considered the MX5 to be like the four-wheeled equivalent- the options are endless and so easy, even for a numpty like me, to work on. Kudos to you for even driving about London at all, btw!

Yeah, I just always have the feeling PCPs are a bit of a trap as you’re quite constricted with them
