Shame they’re no longer producing videos otherwise you would be able to see them slicing into your car.
Now that looks really nice. Great to see folk putting some effort in to keeping another mk2 on the road. Nice one.
Yes there good guys down there , I took my Sport Black to them in June for full underseal treatment , and new anti roll bars fitted they done a first rate job at a very reasonable price.
They posted a video on Youtube about a week ago, it was how to fit Gaz coilovers to a NA, funny it’s not on their website.
That looks great , you must be pleased. I took my Mk2 to them in July for the Discs & Pads renewing, they are a great bunch of guys and their work is always top class…
Where did you get it done. As my mk1 needs a lot doing to it.
I went to The MX5 Restorer near Eastbourne
What did you get done? My 2.5 has more than a little iron oxide!
Far too much and far too expensive. Ended up paying far more than car will ever be worth. Should have asked for a costing instead of giving them a list I suppose. Still ended up with one blistered wheel arch not done which I have got to get sorted. Can’t show my face with a less than perfect MX5 at a Club Event now can I.
Except for the fact, (as we all know they can rot invisibly from the inside out)that until these cars are actually cut open the precise & true extent of reconstructive work is all too often at the very best a roughish guesstimate rather than a one time catch-all firm quote.
Been there.
Twice, with both our 5’s.
In both cases it was bite the bullet and make it better as we went along.
I would have thought that as a marque specialist they would have been able to give you a worse case scenario price. I would have been been a little disappointed if I had to take back a half finished car because the repair bill had escalated out of control. Few of us can afford to hand over a car for repairs with an open ended cheque.
I often wondered watching their videos on u-tube how much they charged as they never mentioned that very important part anywhere. Also, do they charge you for the time they stand around looking at it drinking coffee?
Never heard any complaints about Gareth’s bills, neither are we privvy to the consultations that he has with customers.
Frankly, if you cannot or will not budget for a potential worst case scenario, best to move the car on rather than embark on an expensive restoration chucking cash into a car that wont realise a return of “investment”.
A car is only “original” the day it leaves the factory. 1st rule of a certain Mr Wayne Carini. Hope for the best, prepare with folding stuff for the worst or do not do it all.
Common sense to me, and what I prepared for in both our cars.
ÂŁ4.5k for the MK1 over 6 months and probably circa 4k over 3 years for the Mk2.5 Sport.
In neither case was either car “worth it”…except to us. The Mk1 will see me out I guess for my driving “career”, and I’d expect to get decent book for the Sport, both backed up with extensive photographic & invoice evidence.
No right or wrong answers here, much is driven by subjective opinions.
Objectively, both ours should have been scrapped.
I wasn’t questioning the integrity of them or whether or not it is worth spending the money. The point I was trying to make that having done many of them I would have thought they would have a very good idea of the final bill. Having been in the building trade for 35 years I have never known anybody to give the go ahead for work without a costing.
I’m more than happy with their work, and have asked them about doing the front arches. I bought the car during a period of lockdown madness and I should have set a limit on its restoration I suppose. Then again buying a later Mk2 could have given me just as much to do. I do love my car and it makes me happy every time I drive it, which is much needed in these times.
