MX5 Roadster Coupe Squeaky Roof!

I have a folding hardtop MX5 Roaster Coupe and whilst I’m driving with the roof closed,(up) it squeaks non stop. If i release the roof lock catch, it stops

but obviously I can’t keep driving along with the catch undone as the car warning will be beeping at me because it’s open. Anyone else have this problem

or know how I can stop it? I presume I could rub something into the rubber seal to lubricate it but don’t know what is safe to use without damaging the

rubber.

Kerry

I use silicone spray on all my doors, boot and hood rubbers.

Keeps them squeek free and gives them new life.

Hi Kerry. I’ve had exactly the same with my Mk3. After much googling I found that wrapping a couple of layers of cloth tape around the 2 lugs that locate in the upper windscreen area at each side of the hard top stops the problem. I assume it is caused by slight wear as the roof flexes.

It is not perfectly silent even now and I have another, similar, squeak when the top is down from somewhere but I’ve not traced that one yet. Sounds like plastic rubbing on plastic rather than a metallic rattle.

You can get a silicon anti-squeak spray that will also help.

There is even a kit

You can adjust the catch which can help with this.

Thanks for the reminder.

That page is full of useful TSBs, a couple of which I’ve already found to be relevant, such as the one being discussed and also the wind-noise one from the door because there was not quite enough sealer along the seam where the skin was folded over the inner frame.

I had forgotten about it after my original searches for fixes to silly niggles a couple of years ago.  I’ve bookmarked it now.

Hi Richard

It may be worth while applying some Gummi Pfledge on all your rubbers. Weird name…but works well

Alternative ‘wild card’ solution:  put a mousetrap in the foot well in case it is mice that are squeaking !

Barry

The (Gummi free) roof now only sometimes creaks the once as it settles into place on the first flex of the chassis after it has been closed.  Still 4mm spaced after a couple of years since the adjustment.

In the other TSB the extra sealer was not in contact with any rubbers so no lube needed, but it was a tuned gap whistle/hiss noise at certain speeds and wind directions.  Smoothing off the edge instead of having the tiny little groove on the short bit of inside front top edge of each door made all the difference.  Amazing, and if I’d not tried it I would not have believed it.
