The seats although comfortable seem to lack much lumber support.
I occasionally suffer with lower back pain and wonder if there are solutions to increase the lumber support either via seat modification or purchasing a third party solution i.e. lumber roll ?
Is there anybody who specialises in modifying MX5 seats ?
On the Mk2 and Mk1 it is possible to insert something ino the seat. You can use foam or an inflatable support. I have even used an empy bag from a wine box!
Second what Richard says.
On the Mk1 (and Mk2 as he says) you can feel in behind the seat cushion at your lower back.
There is a transverse pocket in there - on another thread I saw someone recommend using a cheap big sponge.
I don’t personally use any lumbar support, but it is certainly possible.
Give it a while once you get the car before making changes. I have always suffered from a bad back since my teens, but surprisingly enough the MX5’s dont give me any problems at all.
On older MK1s, I think mostly with cloth seat cars, the seat foam can be starting to rot. There are metal springs that the seat foam was moulded around. over time, these can rip through, leaving the base feeling a little saggy, and probably worsening comfort. New foam parts are no longer available.
Have driven a vast array of new and almost new vehicles over the last decade or so and can honestly say that MX5 seats are really very good, even with well over 100,000 on them.
Having said that we need to get a seat swapping circle going with our friends over the water who drive on the other side. Passenger seats always have a lot less usage than the drivers seat.
Swapping left and right hand pairs of seats would benefit everyone.
If you do need some extra padding in the lumbar it will be really easy to put in as suggested by the large sponge method. Enjoy.
