MX5 soaring Popularity?

Morning all ,

I was thinking on the way to work this morning how much the MX-5 has gone up in peoples estimations. Im new to the MX-5 scene but was just wondering if this is something that was happening 5 years ago or has it just started to sky rocket over the past couple of years?

Whatever car mags you read Banzai, Redline and the like there always seems to be an MX-5 featured but back in the day probably not so much. Why do you think peoples perceptions have changed?  More MX-5 Tuners or is it that due to some of the car features the MX-5 has dropped its ‘hairdressers’ tag and is now looked at as a Tunable black horse?

Look forward to your views

The mk1 has had ace magazine coverage since it’s launch. It helps that the cheapest ones now cost pennies and are old enough to get in to the “classic” mags too, but I don’t think there has been any particular increase in journo-scum suddenly thinking it’s a good car.

Possibly in some of the JDM focused magazines there has been an increased interest in RWD as drifting has become slightly more popular over the last five years or so, but in the mainstream motoring press MX5s have always been well regarded.

Always a great little car! See you on the 29th March  “Fish & Chip” run to Bournmouth?

My friends warned me not to get an MX-5 because apparently they’re “gay”. But women seem to like it Wink

People smile and wave at the car too, I think they like it.

Like that film i can’t remember the name of at the moment… I must be gay then Big Smile

ARE YOU GAY? If so i don’t think it is important, how can a car be gay? all this bull s…t ,from your “friends” is irrelevant. what do they drive? i guarantee we have owned similar cars, and my husband, 17 stone doorman and ex boxer is as  far from gay as is possible, mind you if he wasn’t  i would not be bothered as we would not be marriedBig Smile

Much like Janitor, I didn’t really ‘get’ the MX5 until recently when I drove one. A month later I own a MK2 1.8 RS and I’m wondering why I dismissed it before. The power and performance numbers on paper are probably what put me off but when you drive one you understand.

I believe that anyone that has driven one is smitten. Those that try to denigrate them have never been in one and speak from ignorance.

To be  honest i think this subject is getting a bit boring now, there have been so many similar threads.

I have said it before, sorry, but we have owned nearly every hot hatch  there has been but both me and the husband, prefer the mx5!, this is the longest we have owned any car, over 4 years now, 6 months used to be about it in the past.Big Smile we rarely drive without the roof down, that must be one reason we like mx5’s so much.
