R2 RMU - Wanted to avoid car-specific plate, which when I move on is - well, car-specific, so won’t go very well on another car, plus restricts the market if I want to sell the plate on later! You can tell its an MX5 in any case!

Wanted something that reflected my great interest, Severn Valley Railway.

Made me smile this one as when I was in the Marines a “NOD” is a term used by training teams and trained ranks for a recruit.

It will look great on your 5 and make all ex and serving “Royal Marines” smile

Not Mx5 related but pleased with this little purchase this week! My initials and then ‘Y’ 14 clicked for me as the date I was born.

Is there a knack in buying a plate without spending a fortune guys? Maybe someone has brought one recently and could feedback how it goes? Are the DVLA ones worth a look?

Not a knack but an adventurous mind. I’ve bought 5 in the past 3 years and always go to DVLA for price and service. Others are always more expensive with admin and Vat!. Also look at the upcoming timed auctions every 6 weeks or so on DVLA as some have very low reserves and you never know your luck if one takes your fancy!

I got mine about 16 years ago direct from DVLA. They have loads of unissued plates, so just look there to find one that suits you… Think mine cost £250

We love the £250 bargains. The pricing is weird though as I think Y16 ACP was £599. Not necessary!

I’ve always used

for all my number plates. Always had brilliant service from them.

Loads of “MAZ” plates from reasonable to “HOW much?”

Yes there is I purchased one on retention which costs £80 for less than that on EBAY. You just need to have plenty of time and be a little flexible. I bagged S88BPB which means nothing but looks OK.

Ive had 3, all were the cheapest from DVLA (£250 including VAT and transfer).

One was an anagram of my last name, one was for the MX5 when I lived on the Isle of Wight (MX5 1OW X) and one is for my business Shine On (SH12E ON).

You just need to know what you want to search for really.

Jeff. Found one that has my first two letters of surname, with MAZ brilliant. I’lll not tempt fate and order it just yet. Thanks they also register it for you with an all in price, great for £300 fish. Thanks buddy.

Good news - I have MAZ 565 as it was a 65th birthday present! My partners nickname is “Maz” (Maureen) so we have MAZ for her as well and my ND has a 6 digit plate as its a smaller size. Check, but you may have to pay the DVLA fee as well, not sure. If you do, then you could buy now as the DVLA fee of £80 covers retention or use and is only payable once. That way, you can give the Certificate to the car dealer if you are buying new and go straight to your personal plate rather than getting a normal one and then the small hassle of changing it. That’s what I did.
