MX5parts Oil filter removal tool

I have three oil and filter changes to do this summer.  So thinking that this might be a worthwhile investment:

Comments?  Reviews? is there space to get the socket drive on and turn?

Thanks!

I brought my MK2 in winter and gave the car to a local garage to service.  The first service I did I found the chain strap, belt and 3 leg tool just crushed the can.  I went out and brought one from my local car shop and it removed it with no issues. I thought the garage had over tightened the filter but I found the filter does stick on very tightly. You have to be careful that the tool and oil filter have the same number of flats. It makes changing the filter very easy as access is tight.

Over the years I’ve often struggled to remove different types of oil filter with various so-called “removal” tools. I think some garages must employ gorillas to carry out oil changes because I’ve also often had to resort to the old trick of bashing a screwdriver through the canister when the tools couldn’t do the job without damage.

However, a few years ago I bought a pair of oil filter pliers, which haven’t let me down yet; I’ve serviced our family “fleet” without any problems at all.

Good thing about pliers is they’re universal and don’t rely on the correct number / diameter of flats on the end of the canister; they can be used on any vehicle. You don’t need a socket wrench on them, either, so access isn’t restricted where the end of the filter sits close to the bodywork. There is a good choice on Ebay for less than a fiver.

If you want to use one of these cup wrenches this is not the one to buy. You can get one that does two different sizes of filter.

Sorry not at home for a few days but I will post ta link to the cup wrench that does both sizes of MX5 filter.

Thanks Eddie - if you could do so, that would be really helpful.

Hi

I have this wrench and it works great on genuine Mazda filter and a SA filter

Thanks Eddie, thanks badbooks.  Ordered.

Could be wrong (again) but most mx5 oil filters dont have the flat spots?? Usually just circular .I know VW/Audi etc have the flat spots (flutes) but not mx5?
