My Hose Is Leaking - What's It Called? Where To Buy? 1990 Eunos Mk1

Hi all!

My first post in the ‘new’ forum. I was worried when I came back to the old one and saw it all locked down! What a relief to see it lives on here! For some reason my firefox spell checker doesn’t work here though.

I have a problem - One (I hope only one) of my coolant hoses has a nasty leak that squirts rusty coloured water all over the engine which then dribbles up and over the top of the bonnet when driving :frowning: It looks like a large pinhole in the hose and squirts a good 12 inches.

I’ve managed to track down the culprit and have taken some pictures of it…

I’ve tried to outline the faulty pipe in nice pink.

(oops just noticed in the last pic the horizintal pink lines should be higher)

I’ve got larger versions (no pink outline though) here in case you can’t make out what’s where…

Now the problem I have is that I don’t know what these hoses are called in order to get a new one. Do you good folk know what I should be ordering?

And is this the best/cheapest pleace to get them from?.. http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=hose&x=0&y=0

Now I have a crappy horrible cold at the mo and the pipe is in a really awkward place so I did get a mechanic to look at it for me in case I wasn’t up to the job and he quoted me appx £75 all in (25 parts n 50 lab).

That seems a lot to me so am wondering again if this is going to be a can of worms or easy peasy? I’m worried that when removing the faulty pipe I will almost certainly touch the other pipes around it and then WILL they start to leak/break/split as well?

Which is when I looked at the above www.mx5parts.co.uk page they had ‘sets’ of pipes - which made me wonder if one of these sets will do ALL the pipes in this region?

I’m also guessing that as the water is very rusty coloured it will do the car good to flush the system and get some antifreeze in there. Actually that brings up another question - If I paid a garage to do a full service around 1 or 2 years ago should the coolant water still be bright blue or the colour of antifreeze they used shouldn’t it? OR does a full service mean they just check the level of the water/coolant?

I know distilled water should be used - but am wondering if pre-boiled water from my kettle is useable instead?

Any hints n tips or advice would be great.

Thanks

Matt

As you haven’t had any replies so far can I suggest that you use arrows to point to pipes that you think are the leaking ones. More info is better than too little, if you know what I mean.

It sounds as though the whole coolant system needs flushing and back flushing for one thing.                  When making up a new coolant mixture you can use De-ionized water instead of distilled water. I think that’s what it is called.

As far as the pipe work is concerned when one starts to deteriorate then the rest are probably not far behind, so fitting a complete set may be advisable.

It looks like the pipe that goes to the bottom of the throttle body, Mazda part number 13-681A. It’s held on by two clips, I wouldn’t pay a garage £50 to do that job. Get it from your local mazda dealer, or MX5 parts if they list it

If the water is rusty, get it out and flush the system see here for the How to guide

That’s a fairly easy one to change.  The other two tiny hoses are nigh-on impossible.

It looks as though mx5parts only sell a silicone version of that hose, as part of a set along with the other two neighbouring small hoses.

The original rubber part would probably be very cheap from a Mazda dealer, though you might prefer to change all three as they’re probably all in similar condition.  An upgrade to silicone may mean they’re longer lasting, though bear in mind that the original has lasted 15 years or more, so a new rubber hose will probably last you long enough… [:)]
