My Mazda Mx5 1998/2000 Mk2 ran out of petrol

Put petrol in. Petrol around system spark at plugs. New relay but still won’t start.

Leave it switched on for a few minutes. The pump may need time to get the fuel to the engine due to an air lock

I thought all farmers carried a spare can of petrol just in case? Apparently not.

Im pretty sure just leaving the ignition on wont run the pump and you may damage the coil packs.

You need to put a link between FP ( I think ) and ground in the diagnostic port then turn the ignition on to get the pump to run. It only takes about 5 seconds to flush the system through. I know this from problems I had last year.

Good luck.

I’d be doing a fault code read next. You haven’t given that good a description of what actually happened (had it in fact run out of petrol?), but crank and cam sensors can give trouble on NB.

Are you sure that it ran out of petrol and didn’t actually break down whilst running on almost empty.

“Gunk” from the bottom of the tank fouling the fuel line/injectors?

Thats an old wives tale.

The pickup is in the bottom of the tank, so it will always be picking fuel from the bottom, regardless of how much is in.

Further to this, with the amount of fluid movement generated when going over bumps, up/down hill, around corners, braking etc, would mean any sediment would be in suspension.

Only after being stood for several hours would any gunk settle, and this would be picked up on the first turn of the key (everytime).

Also that’s why there’s a fuel filter.
