Had a box arrive today from MX5Parts and thought what’s that!? I’d forgotten i’d ordered a replacement jack handle on back order at the end of November - hardly the most exciting update in the world but i only mention this as for £11.98 delivered, makes such an improvement in the boot. I was going to try and spray my old battered one black but what’s the point for such little money for a brand new one in a ‘genuine parts’ Mazda bag!
For anyone that is missing the factory vehicle information sticker that is usually placed in the driver’s door shut, I noticed Autolink are now offering reproductions for sale and with my car’s one being missing and/or lost over the years, this caught my eye! I went through the sections on the website to provide my car’s details and it arrived a few days later - pleased is an understatement, it looks absolutely spot on and like it was never missing in the first place. Recommended if you need one
This is a bargain on Amazon at the moment if anyone is thinking of a dash cam, £25 on offer and the 32GB card was another fiver - great quality picture and easy to use, it’s so small i have it behind the rear view mirror and can’t even see it
So today i’ve done one of those little OCD type jobs (but also satisfying ) Got the cheap eBay de-bobbler out (usually for clothes) and ran it over the seats. Both seats are in pretty good shape for the age but the driver’s side needed doing a bit more than the passenger’s side, no surprise there!
Not bad considering I didn’t think they really needed doing at first!
… and end result, not a massive difference but enough to make the job worth doing!
Yesterday saw some good jobs done on the car, standard bank holiday weekend however, was raining off and on whilst it was being done and we got soaked, dried off… and soaked again. However, BIG thanks to my good friend for doing this all for me - it’s amazing how us talking earlier in the week about re-attaching my under tray at the back under the engine (as it had come away and was hanging down too low and catching on the floor) resulted in a transmission refresh
Anyway, I decided I wanted to get the gearbox oil changed as i’ve done pretty much every other serviceable item available on this car now and this was still to do, an unexpected result was that when I phoned MX5 Parts on Thursday their 10% off for the bank holiday weekend had just started. Nice!
So ordered 2 litres of Mobil 75W-90 Fully Synthetic gear oil, genuine Mazda upper and lower shift boots, the nylon cup for the gear lever and a drain plug washer, all to be delivered Friday so we could do the job Yesterday. Order arrived, ONE litre of gear oil. GREAT! So pretty hacked off I called up Euro Car Parts who had some different 75W-90 gear oil on the shelf which I went and grabbed so that we could still do the job;
I also bought one of these bottles as saw on a YouTube video how easy it made re-filling the gearbox oil - was worth every penny of not a lot of money!
Anyway, was expecting the gearbox oil to be pretty rough so was pleasantly surprised when what came out looked pretty new, must have been done by the previous owner;
Turret oil however was as beautiful as you’d expect (the syringes made easy work of getting the old stuff out);
I only had one very small hole in the existing upper shift boot which again was a nice result when you see the state of some. But glad to change it anyway!
So that was job done, to finish, have a big wheel selfie taken when on a random drive recently
A few photos from a random countryside drive this morning… would have been rude not too!
… and only 1,000 km’s to go now until the big 200,000 km milestone!
Looks a lot more dramatic in Km, it’s 118,000 miles. Not bad for the age
Absolutely! That sounds MUCH better
Now things have eased a little, i’ve started putting some decent miles on the car now we are out and about a bit more so no major updates other than driving it and cleaning it… but, noticed a couple of weeks ago my original Eunos badged key had a small hair line crack in it. Brilliant! Could have been there years, or could have been there months, but once you see that, all you can see is it snapping in the ignition! So went on the hunt for a replacement and managed to get the below, dispatched direct from Japan (only took 10 days from order to doormat);
It’s the valet key as far as i’m aware, but i didn’t get one with my car as was missing but thought the part number might be useful for someone one day… after a pain the rear with Timpson’s, where my local branch said he couldn’t cut a car key - even though car key blanks were hanging on the wall … I eventually got it cut at the next Timpson’s branch about 10 miles away where the guy referred to the other guy as useless lol! Anyway, all done…
Got this photo the other evening, bit grainy, but hey - i like it anyway!
I had been having some issues with the clutch the last few days. When in heavy traffic, the top half of the clutch pedal was going ‘floppy’ meaning i only had half the pedal travel to change gear, but also, when crawling along at slow speeds in heavy traffic last Tuesday it even dipped the revs a couple of times and I couldn’t get it out of gear. Pumping the pedal a few times got it free again and back in gear to move forward, but it’s a bit nerve wrecking thinking it’s going to cut out/clutch go in traffic… when rolling, it was fine (as not using the pedal of course) and otherwise the clutch still engaged.
I ordered a brand new ‘genuine’ slave cylinder from MX5 Parts that was to be fitted at the local trusted garage, hoping that’s what it is, if not, the slave would go on anyway. It’s just because the pedal comes back a bit when pumped, I had my fingers crossed.
Got the car back from the garage today and the slave cylinder has hopefully done the job, pedal feels as it should now and what with the brand new slave AND clutch fluid change, probably actually feels a bit better than before as it’s been refreshed. They said the old clutch fluid that came out was absolutely awful and I can believe it, probably not been changed for many, many years!
Old vs the new, the old one apparently just fell apart when they took it off!!
I also purchased a Jass Performance brake stopper from Moss recently so got that on the car, simple stuff, will be interesting to see if it makes any difference. They say the feel is more solid under braking as takes away some of the flex on the master cylinder but we’ll see.
Had a great day up at Elvington yesterday for the World Record Attempt, this was my first event with the club and it didn’t disappoint - just over 400 miles driven (not including the attempt laps) and a roughly 8 hour round trip made it a pretty long day! My car was one of only two (i think) white Mk1’s there and had a nice chat with the lady owner of the other one… i had to slip away after the third attempt due to the distance to get home and still didn’t get back until 9pm but all worth it and pleased to have been part of things!
Hi,
I know it has been a few years since you posted anything, but do you still have the car?
I came across your post because I struggled to figure the model specs for my Eunos which is a S-package 1993 NA Silverstone metallic.
Cheers
Adi
Specs will be determined if your car is a early 1993 (1.6, NA6CE) or later 1993 (1.8, NA8C).

Hi
Thank you for your reply.
It was difficult to track the model specs off the brochure, because the door sticker was unreadable. Although I have this car for like 10 years now, I only just recently thought seriously about figuring the year, the model specs etc. I know the vin, and managed to read the door sticker with UV light, which worked amazingly! This car had 5 former keepers in the UK only, and don’t know how many in the Japan because it is an import, so it had things changed or added and it wasn’t matching with anything exactly as in the brochure.
I just needed to know the year to confirm if it’s a Special package or whatever else.
I tried a million sites for VIN checks and found one on Google japan, and it confirmed it’s a September 1993, Special Package.
I also narrowed it down by looking at the seatbelt label which was 1993.
I bought this car because I needed a cheap spare one for when parents were visiting so I never actually looked into the details of it, payed £600 and thought it must be an 89, 91. Years passed by and it sat either in the garage or covered by a tarp.
It had annual MOTs until it failed a couple of years back due to underneath rust and had to decide either scrap or sell…or do.
And after a lot of consideration I thought of saving it from extinction and do it. So it had everything welded or changed and sealed underneath and now I’m doing extras like the OP was doing.
This is where I find the manufacturing date for anyone who’s struggled like me.

Another thing that I still haven’t figured is how do I find the original colour code of the soft hood, or if there’s a Mazda catalogue for it.
I bought this car with a red/burgundy soft top which was very very worn out and I believe it was a Mazda original. I replaced it with black mohair, but I’d like to go back to the red one now. Any ideas?
Thank you !
