My Naughty Nasty Five.. From Start To Now...

HI guys well here I am, swayed away from the Imprezas that I once owned, other cars being Volvos, BMWs, Opels and the ongoing list and bought myself my 1st MX5

So here it is

cost me €500 (cheap for Spain), its LHD on English plates which means I can mod it and not get stung by EU manufacturers law (Bullsh1t law)

1991 MX5 (Miata) NA 1.6 115cv

Its been stood doing nothing for more than 5 years so its been hell for me lol

Will Update with more pics soon of the work iv done but so far I have bought and replaced:

Done So far:

Battery

Battery Terminals

Earth Lead

Brake Discs and Pads

Rear Calipers as were seized solid but one of the replacement leaks so waiting for new seals etc

Master cylinder was seized so replaced

New Dot 4 fluid

The AFM had done its stupid number 2 pin thing so sorted that and it now starts lol

Drained fuel tank and put clean in, dam it stunk!

Yet to do:

Finish of replacing timing belt as local dummies (Motor Factors) that I use for my business make it out like they have never seen an MX5 so not impressed with amount of parts being wrong lately, so just changed suppliers and guess what, within 10 mins my new account was open and the correct water pump will be here tomorrow, thank **** haha

Change the oil and filter and rebuild rear caliper

Only rushing as we have a local track day in a place called Ascari that I want to go to so will hopefully get some pics and videos from up there

So anyway the plans:

GET THOSE GOD AWFUL THINGS OFF THE BONNET!!! Think they been stuck with some industrial stuff as they on well haha

Find somewhere close who can get a hardtop

Get the rusty bits sorted where its leaked through the roof and in the battery area which is bad due to a stolen ariel and slight bit on sills

Get a roll cage, coilovers, bigger brakes, at some point strip it all and have the whole shell treated and resprayed but thats when the engine change is being done which is hopefully a fully forged 1.8 turbod block

Lots of plans over the next year  and will update as and when I have bought parts etc etc

Nice to meet you all and stay tuned

Looks good for 500 Euros. At that money if you can get it to run you are onto a winner. Nice to hear that the bonnet vents are going. What goes through some peoples minds?

Ascari, the most beautiful track that nobody has heard of! Have fun!

Thanks for that, I have more to update but it froze when I was doing it so will update now

Just a small update with some other pics too, managed to get most of the service bits done today, just praying on the caliper rebuild kit to arrive today as Spain have bank holiday this weekend so basically everyone is too pissed or lazy to work till mid Tuesday haha

So for start off after FINALLY getting the correct water pump its installed:

And here we have the typical Mazda fault that I will be fixing today:

Now all timed up after finding out that its been run one tooth out since its last change which was god knows when

All back together with Oil filter changed ready for the stat fix then add coolant and oil, new spark plugs in and air filter done so hopefully by the end of the day she will be up and running again just to await the brake repair

Here is a pic of the inside, this will change rather rapidly when time and money permits

This is how bad the battery tray is so going to look at that after the track day on Monday (if i make it lol)

Anyways will update more soon

Stay tuned folks

Here is next update

Fixed the stat housing and got it all together, started to fill with coolant but have a leak somewhere down the side of the engine, maybe where the water pump meets but not sure but run out of light so will investigate more tomorrow, just some pics of the work I did

Things i used to fix the housing was as follows:

1/8 BSP Threaded tail end and 8mm t piece

1 mtr 8mm Hose

6 Jubilee Clips

Tools:

8mm Drill bit will angled air drill

1/8 BSP Tap

17mm Spanner and 16mm

6mm spanner for the tap unless yours is different size

Magnet and air to remove the particles

Straight edge screw driver

Also added extra was removing the broken stat housing bolt but that different thing lol

1st thing i did was run the 8mm drill bit through the side of the broken housing making sure it was straight and clean

Then used a 1/8 bsp tap to make the thread, again making sure it was straight to ensure a good thread is made

The using PTFE tape on the thread of the tail end placing it in so it looks something like this:

This Tail end was the only one I could get in short notice but you can get them on ebay here: http://www.ebay.es/itm/BSP-Taper-Thread-x-Hose-Tail-End-Connector-Brass-Fitting-for-Air-Water-Fuel-/121360796379?var=&hash=item1c41aacadb&clk_rvr_id=909427101640&rmvSB=true

Wants to be 1/8 bsp and 5/16 diameter for the hose

As I was adding more with this and the T piece I replaced all the hoses that joined and slightly re routed it

This was from the inlet manifold and extended to keep away from the aux betls

Now this is the part where my leak may be as the hose for the next line broke will replacing but again to keep away from the belts i placed like this

So all back together minus the inlet and top hose which I did but too dark for pics doesnt look too bad and looks pretty factory fitted

Anyway, time to get some rest and get on another day to find the leaks

Also going to have to miss track day as the caliper repair kit did not arrive and have now got this leak so not too impressed

Stay tuned folks

Well found the leak, was the gasket on the back of the water pump so had to take it all off again and sort it, what a mare lol

Going to see if I can bodge fix the caliper tomorrow to make the ascari track day but not promising :frowning:

Best part… its alive again!!

Good luck!  Such dedication deserves reward!!

lol thanks buddy  Not been able to do anything on it today as weather here has been pretty water logged, going to have to miss ascari tomorrow :frowning: But kinda deciding that this 5 is going to be more of a show toy and going to get another 5 from the UK to track/race

Sounds a good idea to me!

Think Its going to be a mk2 for that tho hehe

HI guys not much of an update, well in a way its not but the 5 is alive!

After fixing the 1st leak I got it all up and running to find another leak haha the clip that holds the hose to the stat housing was shot, so replaced that and we now have a nice sealed coolant system

The caliper rebuild kit arrived and forgot to get pics of the rebuild as I did it, but will be getting another for the other side so will do a write up on that when I do it

Here is pics just after I finished bleeding all the system up etc and before its well deserved bath ( 1st in over 5 years!!) And what a state it was, still not to my standards but better than it was

And then after a good bath and some well deserved driving, I found a good place near where I work and took some more decent pics

Enjoy

So there we go so far so good…ish, still a long way to go before I can call her my decent 5 but the start has been made

Stay tuned folks!

Looking REALLY good to me!

hi, liking your interesting posts; good luck & keep it up.

I am one of them who never heard of Ascari but will investigate next time visiting Estapona.
