It was a bit lighter outside this morning than it was when I drove my car home from the dealer yesterday so here are a few pictures of my 1991 BRG limited edition. Car is in pretty good condition, the locks are a bit dodgy and sometimes unlock themselves so on wednesday I’m having an alarm and keyless entry fitted. Could also do with a bonnet repray as there are usual chips for a 20 year old car plus an area of bad laquor (is that expensive?)
Reminds me of a 60s Elan, so I was thinking of getting some alloys with a retro style, maybe in gold. Does anyone have a shortlist of alloys that are proven to look good on MX5? I’m a bit lot with how many there are.
Will be busy today cleaning the outside and interior, especially the interior has 20 years of grime in between some of the panels
Quite a few BRGs (and other colours) have areas of material that is “lacquer like” that is lifting off, whether thats from the bumpers, or, typically, top edges of the wings. I think the only fix is a panel repaint.
A 20 year old car might have also seen the inside of a paint booth during its life.
Tracking down a set of 14" or 15" BBSs, and painting them gold (like the S-Limited) will suit; you can use BBSs from VWs and BMWs. I don’t think the original LE wheels were actually BBSs, though they are very similar.
Front plate looks fine just a little warped from age, these plates run out in a few days anyway so I have to get the cars original registration plates made up.
Because it reminds me so much of an old British sports car with it’s paint and interior I was thinking of having either a metal one made up which is black with white raised letters, or a stick on one in same colours.
Not sure what the story with the wheels are as they seem to be gunuine MX-5 wheels.
Defo missing the plastic plinth the numberplate sits on. Not a problem if you’re going for a stick-on plate (as I have). Considering changing my front plate for a jap-style offset bracket, they look good.
The wheels are aftermarket I think? They look like fox racing ones…
When I was going to collecting I was dreading I’d made a mistake because the car I was losing, my focus was spacious, quite, comtable and quiet and I was worried the MX-5 wasn’t.
The strange thing is the MX-5 wasn’t any of those things, it’s small, loud and uncoftable… and for some reason I like it better that way.
I have a tan soft top too but I havn’t quite figured out how to remove the hard top yet lol.
I’m thinking of getting the speakers replaced soon because they’re old and naff. I have 2 in the doors and 2 behind the seats, I’m getting an after market head unit installed soon will that provide enough power to drive some ok speakers without an amp?
A decent head unit will drive 4 speakers no problem. I can recommend the Fusion IP-500 I have if iPod is your thang. The iPod actually slots into the head unit and it works really well. I think they are less than £100 now as well!
I have Alpine E series speakers, again, recommended.
