Hi everyone I have a question. My Eunos Mk1 was first registered in the UK in 1992 but could have been made three years earlier in Japan. It has travelled just under 100,000 miles from I guess since 1992. My question is at what stage does it become a vintage car.
In the UK, never. Vintage status is reserved for those built between 1919 and 1930.
The taxman considers a Classic Car to be 15 years or older and worth at least ÂŁ15,000.
Think in the UK for e.g. the MX-5 it’s generally 40 yrs old to be labelled a Classic
It must be 40, my mk2 golf gti is 40 next year and wont need an MOT and it will qualify for classic insurance from what I’ve been told, so another 6-7 years until any NA can be classed as classic?
I’ve had classic insurance on my 1996 Roadster for many many years. Cutoff is 15 years for insurance, not 40.
As an aside, the term used in regards of MOT/VED exemption is “Historic” rather than Classic.
So am I understanding this correctly ?
40 yrs of age = No MOT [Although one would still want to do this voluntarily ?]
15 yrs of age = Qualify for Classic Insurance [which is more/less expensive ?]
TIA
Depends on the insurance company. 15 years is the definition they came up with. Generally means different products on offer, including very low limited miles.
While no MOT, you are still obiged to maintain a car in a roadworthy state, or risk a ÂŁ2500 fine and 3 points. The crux will come in 2032, when the first 40 year old cars appear with obligatory catalytic converters, and more stringent emissions limits. Owners who maintain the cars at home will likely find it harder to ensure their cars still meet emissions requirements, except when they are pulled over for a random VOSA roadside sniffer test, and slapped with a 4 figure fine.
Ah I didnt know about the 15 year age for insurance, might have a look into that thanks to my insurance jumping up by a fair amount this year
Phew
Thanks for this helpful info
Low Mileage & Original Exhaust so far not failed emissions VOSA test
So back to sorting Advisories and Desirables
