Mysterious front wing holes - NA

My 1996 VR-Limited has an elongated hole on the upper fitting ‘flange’ of each wing - on the N/S adjacent to the wiper motor, and on the O/S next to the fusebox.  They were covered with very neat, square-ish patches of fabric tape, about 22 x 18mm, and were clearly applied before the top coat of paint, as when peeled off, there’s just original satin finish grey primer - see photo.  I’m pretty sure the wings and paint are original, but can’t be certain.

Interestingly, my '94 Eunos has the same holes, but just conventionally sprayed with no tape.

Anyone have any idea about the function of the unused holes?  I’m guessing something to do with the manufacture or fitting of the wings - but I’d like to know definitively.  It’s not an issue - I’m just curious!

Maybe alignment marks when car was being assembled ??Lots cars have those so the jigs etc align everything exactly
