I got the Mk1 Eunos out of storage and noted a mouse has nibbled on a/c pipe lagging and noted a small pool of water on the floor when I started it up and moved it.
Water is escaping from somewhere at the back of the engine. The heater hoses are fine. Its leaking somewhere around the back of the head and to the offside of the block at the back - it pools on the flat bit under the clutch and brake reservoir and it drips down onto the bell housing all on the offside of the engine. I ran my fingers around the back of the head as best I could but it is dry apart from a slight weep of oil from the advance mechanism. No water is on the top of the bell housing apart from the offside lower down
Any clues from experience as to where I should be looking as there are no hoses there and its not wet inside the car either?I cannot figure out where it is coming from?
Mx5 have small rubber hose blanked off just under the Cam Angle Sensor (advance mechanism as you call it)but you need torch to see it.Only last week I had mk1 in with leak from the hose.It comes blanked off from Mazda but it can leak coolant. Is coolant level low??
Thats the one and get standard type hose clip ( old style ,screw type0 and tighten it nicely. The original clips are hard to get back on and dont seem to have much tension on them ,being sio smal etc.Fuel line Jubilee clip is what you need basically Ah no need to take cam cover off as it wont help access.CAS ok remove and tippex the postiion of it for refit .Remove coil pack for easy of access. Took me about 1 hour to chip/cut it off and 5 minutes to put new one back on !!
Actually wasn’t that hard to do - still a PITA though
Remove the three wiring plugs on top of the coil pack brackets and undo the coil pack top bolts.
Remove the plug leads from the coil pack and slacken the lower bolt and tilt the coil pack to the nearside.
Remove the bolt on the engine lifting eye and move it all to one side.
Mark with permanent marker or dot punch the CAS and lower it down so it sits wedged under the clutch reservoir out of the way.
Remove the two wires to the water senders and push to one side.
At this point it is clearly visible and you can get a hand into it no problem (but not two )
Don’t bother trying to un-tension the clip on the blanking hose - instead get a long thin screwdriver and hammer/ease the tangs apart. Apair of very long nose pliers will also help ease them back so the clip has no tension on the blanking plug .
Rotate the clip so a gap is uppermost and using a Stanley knife cut through the blanking hose.
It will then literally fall off
Clean the pipe.
Bit of soapy water, stick on the new plug and using a flexible jubilee clip socket tool do up the jubilee clip.
Then reverse all of the above.
Took me an hour total and that include swearing and having to walk away a few times rather than kick the cr*p out of the car in sheer frustration!!
The cause of the leak?
A bl**dy mouse had eaten the end of the plug and had left a pin hole in it - hence the water spraying onto and filling up the flat area under the reservoirs and no water hose nearby - no wonder I was confused.com.
