I simply removed the relay (passenger side near the wiper motor) on a friends NA and it went back to “normal” ( whatever that means
) with no loss of any other functionality.

So would it stop the headlights coming up at all with the side lights on then? Just pop up when the main beam is on?
It will work as normal, i.e. side lights = side lights only, pop-ups come up on dip or main.

Hi Jeff,
So what does it mean in terms of removing the resistor then? Can I completely remove it or will I need go rewire at all?
Thanks
No, remove the RELAY, leave everything else in place. As mentioned, it can be found under the bonnet, passenger side up at the back near the windscreen wiper motor. Mounted on the right. Once removed, the headlights will only pop-up when you want them to, via the stalk or switch in the tombstone.

Ah right okay,
Kind of half what i was looking for then. I was looking to remove this completely, not just stop the lights coming up with side lights.
Not done this before but if you remove the relay(HD22), you are effectively killing the circuit so would expect you could simply remove the main Dim Dip unit as well. Certainly worth just unplugging it to see first.
Unplugged and removed the resistor and now it just doesn’t pop up and down automatically, only pops up and down with the button.
Any masters of the dark art of car electrics know a by pass or fix for this?

Well, I wish you the best of luck with that.
Google searches clearly say that relay removal deals with the situation and that goes to the more trustworthy, US Miata appraisals.

I have never seen the diagrams of the cars with dim-dip but what I’ve gleaned over the years is that they are not all the same and what works to disable or remove it in some does not work in others. This isn’t particularly surprising as there was a significant change in the way the popups were wired when 1.6 production (temporarily) ended and 1.8 production began. That probably required a revision of how dim-dip worked too.
Without looking at a diagram I can’t be sure but I’d guess that you’d need to bridge the connector where the dim dip resistor was. I wouldn’t do it without checking on a wiring diagram though (or do so at your own risk). What’s your VIN?
