Hi all someone must have come across this before ! Basically I took my old radio out and the cubby box and bought a new double din Alpine unit but when I came to fit it the hole in the mount is 5mm or so too high so the unit will not secure properly and doesn’t lock in like it should ?
Any thoughts on how to bridge the gap and secure it ? I tried looking to see if there was a spacer kit on Mx5 parts but only single din found.
I have fitted a double din unit to my mk1 when fitting it I secured the cage to the top of hole so the gap is at the bottom, which when you put the surround on never really notice there’s a gap there .
Hmm yes that is what I tried to do. But I have found it will not secure and keeps dropping both down and forward looking and being insecure. How did you attach it at the top, perhaps I am missing something?
I wonder if this might help?

This is the unit I bought: http://www.halfords.com/technology/car-audio/car-stereos/alpine-cde-w235bt-double-din-car-stereo-with-parrot-bluetooth
When I fitted the cage I bent all the fitting tabs back in the end as I only done a few to start with but didn’t hold the unit well enough and slid down like yours is doing, doing all of them has made it more secure. Nice radio by the way I bought a Sony unit with all the bells and whistles from halfords for £120 in a sale .
I had just this issue and bought the cage from Jass Performance. An ill-fitting radio would drive me mental.

I can’t recommend it highly enough. The radio fit like a glove, is totally solid, and in black you would forget it’s there.
My radio is this one (which i also recommend!)

I just found a pic of it actually. Excuse the missing air vent!

Thanks for the replies yes it is annoying ! I looked at the jass stuff but the hole for the radio isn’t the same size mine is 178mm wide and 100mm high and the jass kit says 96 x 172 and at £40 I would not like to risk it just in case it doesn’t work unfortunately Autoleads no longer list a DD surround for the Mk1 .
What size was the Sony unit by the way?
Hi,
I just popped out with a measuring tape, so my measurements will be a few mills different i guess.
THe outer edges (the size of the hole in the console) i measured to be
180mm*120mm
And the size of the radio itself was
170mm * 96mm
I just noticed on the jass performance website that they have different versions for the different size variants, so might be worth giving them a call if this is the route you want to go down.
Many thanks have sent them a message via website . How did you find them deal with, incidentally your radio appears the precise same size as mine so maybe the std one would fit? How was P&P etc?
I just ordered it online (along with a bunch of other stuff like the heater control panel). The package arrived not too long after (I can’t remember exactly how long for delivery).
Postage was £6.50
I can’t recall any issues.
