Na Intermediate rust proofing products

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 1993 eunos
  2. I’m based near: Stratford upon Avon
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: corrosion prevention

Morning all,

This is probably something that’s been asked more times than anyone wants, but wanted an up to date view on the products currently available.

I’m looking at doing some diy rust protection to the sills, arches and just in general underneath. More as a preventative measure for now with the plan of eventually getting a full under-seal by a reputable garage.

Watched/ read lots on the process so familiar with that. More just not sure on which product to go with. Liking the look of the bilt Hamber products due to the ease of application, as well as rating there other products. I know DINITROL and other waxoil products are a favourite, but the spray method would work best for me currently.

But wanted to hear from actual experience, over time and so on to see which is worth going for. As I said just want sort of an intermediate protection currently till a full protection can be sorted.

Cheers for any of your views, if I’ve missed any great previous threads on this, just tag it bellow and I’ll check it out.

I used the dinitrol kit from Rejel for the arches and rear, worked a treat and leaves a lovely finish. I’ll probably buy more to do the rest of the floor.

For me, it’s always Aquasteel on the cleaned, bare, metal be it rusty or not before Dinitrol
others may have a different opinion . . .

Don’t forget those box sections , as most rust from the inside out like an exhaust, but also once the underside and box sections are treated , it is far from the all done forget it and walk away assuming that you have stopped the tin worm for ever now.
What as been done is make all good and protected, but you have started a managing process now its right, every 12 months you need to get underneath and check, “if” there as become a spot where something as flicked up and Pierced the skin/protection ,it then becomes a simple process of dealing with that small area alone, staying on top of it will keep it at bay, the cavity wax will start to dry out over time so will need topping up around , 2 to 3 years.
doing this will keep them healthy, try and find a undersealing Co that will guarantee it will never need doing again ever after they have taken you cash, if they say yes , they are lying.
See it the same way as the lovely top colour that you polish to death to stay fresh and protected, that thin layer of plastic over bare metal that as been mixed into a colour thats protecting the panels , if you get a nice stone chip in a wing etc , the first thing you will do is get some touch up and clear coat on it because its " unsightly" or that you don’t want that area to rust with the bare metal, same applies underneath as it gets more abuse and is sight unseen don’t care.
Thats why we use thicker products on the undersides, arches and in the box sections, Don’t be fooled by a lot of the undersealing Co’s, unless they are upfront and truthful with you on this protection process…
I do recommend doing this yourself and saving, which I guarantee a deeper better job than these Co’s will do 100% with your own time spent with the right directions and advice,if its about confidence on, taking the job on, we can help there , we have already struggled so no one else needs to, prep is the key like anything and the tools needed are not as dear as you think.
If you need some directions , by all means give me a shout.
If i can do it on axle stands in gods garage, anyone can…

cheers for all the info. Ill have to do some more shopping around before i decide on a brand. Im happy to do the check up and re apply annually, hopefully having the car only out for the nicer months should limit the beating the underside takes.

if i get going on it or stuck ill be sure to give you guys a nudge

cheers
