The B6 (1600) & BP (1800) engines fitted in NA & NB MX-5’s are a non interference (safe) engine, in standard form*. This means that if timing belt failure does occur then the pistons & valves will not come into contact with each other and engine internals will not be damaged.
*If the engine has for example had high lift cams fitted then this may not be the case.
