NA non starter

OK we have a NA 1.6 auto project which has been parked up in a garage for five years. I put a new battery on and it started more or less straight away turned it off after 30 seconds.

So drained old fuel and fitted new fuel filter and oil filter and fresh oil and new plugs. . before trying to start I bridged out ground to fuel pump for 30 seconds to build up fuel presser.

Now it won’t start turns over fine and try to fire but just won’t pick up any ideas please

Trust you did put new fuel in

Yes new fuel

Can you hear fuel pump running when ignition is on.If not bridge FP and GND in diagnostic box and listen again for pump

have bridged ground to fuel pump in diagnosis box and can hear pump running

If it is trying to fire, it sounds like there is a spark at least.

I would guess the problem is fuel related - perhaps a blocked filter, old fuel still in the system, etc.

Check that with the ignition on the pump runs until the system is pressurised and then stops. If OK disconnect the flow fuel pipe and pump some fuel through the system into a container. This will clear any old, stale fuel which I suspect is the problem.

How did you get her started in the first place with the old fuel still present? Five year old fuel will have no possibility of igniting.

As you have had the car started, you know that there cannot be too much wrong. Check all leads properly reconnected and try a diagnostic on the car.

Rhino when you bridge the ground to fuel pump in the diagnosis box  with ignition on should I leave it bridged until I heard the pump stop?

How did you drain the fuel? Have you put any pipes that you removed back on the correct way?

Robbie drained fuel by removing the pipe from the tank side of the filter then changed the filter replaced fuel pipes and filled tank with fresh fuel. I don’t think the system is pressurising as when I remove the filler cap there’s no hiss. I think hiss is a technical term lol

I wouldn’t worry about there being no pressure in the tank. Have you refitted the spark plug leads the correct way round?

Robbie yes all leads are on correct. have just taken the flex fuel pipe off where it comes into the engine bay and fuel is getting up to there. mite try taking the leads off of mine see if that helps… it fires but just doesn’t catch to run

I had a similar problem on my S Ltd.   It would look like there was fuel getting to the injectors but like yours would not fire.  I desperation I got a second hand fuel pump from Autolink and bobs your uncle as soon as it was fitted we were away.   I was told that fuel pumps never pack up.

also have you tried a reset on the ECU.

Had the injectors off and tested all working fine have a new set of jump leads to try then it’s narrowed down to faulty coil pack or as you say the fuel pump

Out of interest (but good sense) have you changed the oil, filter and coolant? If the cars been standing for five years these both need doing. Resetting the ECU also seems a good idea to me.
If it started when you first tried it with a new battery, then there’s apparently nothing wrong with ignition or fuel system components, so pulling everything apart may get you nowhere.

Old adage - with common sense added - “If it 'aint broke - don’t fix it”

Yes new oil  ,oil  filter and coolant and plugs plus old fuel drain and fresh fuel.  how do I reset the ecu?

Good - have you tried resetting the ECU?

Sorry - The forum is acting up again - just got bumped off before I could reply.

Disconnect the Battery negative lead, press the brake pedal for at least ten seconds, reconnect the negative lead, pause, and then try starting. If there’s any fault code registered, this should clear it.

I can’t promise its the answer, but it may be.

Perished cambelt snapped?

Cam belt is good but will be changed before going on the road
