Trying to find a straightforward replacement for my Mk 1 door tweeters as one of them is broken and I would like to upgrade. Have done quite an extensive online search and rang MX5 parts but have been unable to find new replacements which will be easy to fit. Any advice would be really appreciated.
That’s a good solution. The problem is that the original drivers are glued into the grilles. I gave up and just got coaxial speakers in the doors. They were cheap and sound a lot better than the original component speakers.
I hadn’t realised they were Japan only parts. I was gradually coming to conclusion that it might have to be an after market solution but useful to have this confirmed. Given the poor quality of the sound from the one which works I wasn’t inclined to try and obtain a second hand one and from what you are saying this might be hard to find anyway given the rarity.
Just to clarify then, would you say that if you have Coaxial speakers in the doors does that mean that the tweeters become redundant. I have replaced the main speakers with JVC Coaxials already and plan to sound insulate these now I have the door cards off - in which case would there been any advantage to buying some good quality after market tweeters? Ideally I would like to maintain the original look of the car and would prefer not to change the tweeter grills.
I think you and I have identical cars. I’ve left the old tweeters in place but not attached. I still think it would probably sound better with the tweeters replaced, particularly for with the hood down, as the upper register gets a bit lost down in the foot wells. When I’ve got the time I’m going to dremmel out the old tweeters and find a way of sticking some replacements in, but with several other more pressing jobs it might take a while.
Have added the sound deadening behind and surrounding the Coaxial door speakers and it seems to have made a big difference - I don’t think I will need to add new door tweeters now so some time, hassle and a potential bodge saved
I put these in my Eunos, also have the 100mm ones in my headrests all from Halfords and they actually sound good match my orange stitching in the leather which was a big plus
