Has anyone used Nankang NS-2R 215/45 R17 in an mx5 primarily for track use? If possible to compare them with the likes of PS4 or PS5 or anything else similar?
Re purchasing, I know I can get them from bofi and other places after a google search but does anyone know where I can get them but to get a price with having them fitted?
Preferably West Midlands
ÂŁ123 each fitted, although I am in the East Midlands.
How do they compare?
The first thing you will noticed if they will make far more road noise, that may bother you or not. They are also stiffer and so ride quality will be worse. You will also find, that on the road, you will have no more grip particularly and in particular noticeable less in the wet and damp.
What you should however find is that they feel more direct, the PS4 or 5 is not the the most responsive tyre.
In track, if you get the heat into them, they have a sweet spot and should perform better than the Michelin, certainly after 3 or 4 laps as they will be more able to sustain temperature. You can over drive them though and they will go off. The down side of the tyre is it is not the best at heat cycles, especially if you drive hard frequently. However they do have good longevity. The only way you will know if you get on with then however, is to try them.
Hi Nick, thanks you are in Northampton aren’t you? At least I now have a price so when its purchasing time I will add everything up. I have a van so I could bring the wheels to you I guess.
I was going to use the NS2R on my spare wheels to replace the ps5 set I currently use. I still have probably 1-2 trackdays left on these at the moment. I did slightly bubble my ps5 in a hot summer day at doni but I will still use the ps5 for daily road use and winter/wet days. Because I still use road tyres I do 15-20 min stints max so the NS2R will be used as my “better track” tyres on my spare wheels with the hope they would cope with the heat slightly better and I can do longer stints. I didn’t really want to buy a proper track tyre primarily because I don’t believe I drive hard enough to put a decent amount of heat in a trackday tyre and make it work properly
I’m in the same boat. I have used NS2r on an ep3 track car and a Twingo RS non track car. They’re pretty poor to be honest. They’ll do well on a dry track day and wear well but as said, they’re very noisy, harsh and ■■■■in the wet.
I’m using Falken FK510 at the moment and they’re 90% of PS4 performance but half the price. I do want to get a more track focused tyre, but the options are so limited for an all rounder.
MRF would be what I’d like to try next but they’re too expensive for me. Ar1 are a step up from NS2r but ■■■■in the wet.
PS4 or PS5 would be a minor step up but not worth doing until these are dead.
I’ve used Accelera 651S before on my track ep3 and they’re really good for the money. Even in the wet. They seemed to lose their best after a couple of laps though so not really massively better than the Falkens.
Why did Yokohama stop making the AD08R!!! (Don’t get the RS, they’re useless)
A lot aren’t available in my size, or in UK, or are discontinued. Good to see AD08RS at the bottom though they are ■■■■. AD08R were mega. AD09 aren’t in my size, yet.
May be ÂŁ650 is without VAT? May be they are a legitimate business expense!!
Reminds me of doing an audit in the late 60’s. A client had tried to put 4X5.20X10 tyres through his books but smart arsed me knew they would not fit any of the vehicles in the plant register. A journal transfer to directors loan account was immediately completed. It impressed the audit manager no end.
Tyres are one thing you can’t cheat on price, that and grip are solidly linked and there is no way around it.
Pay more, get more grip.
Pay less, get less grip.
I’ve never found an exception to that rule.
You still pay vat, it is just a different way of showing a price. Tyres would be ÂŁ632 before vat, it still needs to be paid though. If you are vat registered, you can reclaim it.
