Nardi boss rubbing steering column cowl

I have fitted wooden Nardi Torino nd correct boss to a 97 mk1. I dont think this was an airbag car and the previous wheel was a non airbag aftermarket. All went on fine but its rubbing the plastic steering cowling slightly and is sitting right it that. I have removed it once as I thought I may have over tightened it but it’s still too tight on the plastic cowl. Bar filling the boss or trimming the cowl is the any other way of gaining some space.

Many Thanks
Tom

The boss is for a 1990-1995 car. You have to file flat the cowl. I would also recommend removing the steering column spacer. This is what I did on my 1996 car.

Non-airbag late Mk1s have an eccentric boss, so when you fit the centric Nardi boss, the wheel is a bit low.

Thanks for the advice, is it easy to remove the steering column spacer and what would that improve?

The spacer is easy to remove.

My original factory wheel

On the original, you can see the eccentricness of the boss

Cowling removed

To see the spacder plate/shimm, you need to get into the footwell and look up

Couple of bolts, and its out, refit the bolts

Note, with the spacer removed, the cowling does push against the binnacle

Also, you will find, with the Nardo, you won’t get as many turns on thesteering wheel nut as for the stock wheel.
