Hi all,
Does anyone have any recommendations for a company who could restore the rather battered Nardi leather gear knob for my RS-Ltd? It’s past the point of leather restoration and needs retrimming.
I’ve tried a couple of places and either had a no or an eye-watering figure, which suggests they’d rather not do it.
Thanks in advance.
What’s an “eye watering figure”. Brand new Nardi Prestige shifters are £100 or so. Some Subaru Imprezas has the same knob, but they use a M12x1.25mm thread pitch not a M10x1.25mm thread used in the MX-5. I’m not sure if its a different insert or the shifter core is cut differently, but thread converters are easy to find.
You’ll probably have to pay the retrim tax. If its £100 to get that done, that’s a bargain compared to the £120+ being asked out there by chancers offering tatty used examples.
Hi ast,
I’ve had a quote for £400 for a retrim! I was expecting it to cost a bit, but not quite that much!
Why do you want it retrimed? For originality? I’ve got one that I took off (keeping it for originality though, sorry) and fitted a leather one from an NB as I think the Nardi one is too lightweight. Have you compared the weight of your Nardi to an original urethane one?
Did you try these:

I suspect the ones pricing themselves out of a job really wanted to retrim an entire interior.
As an alternate suggestion, find your nearest arts & crafts club or the next art & crafts fair in your area and see if anyone is doing leather work and ask them if they’d like to do it (take it with you to show them/unscrew it when you get there) and how much they’d be looking for.
