NB hot oil smell in car

Now the roof is up a bit more often I can smell hot engine oil inside the car when the roof is up, windows closed and heater fan on 1 with heat to cold.

I’m not loosing engine oil and there is no sign of leaks. Is this normal or do I have a blocked breather or vent pipe?

If so any ideas what might be blocked?

Nb has just turned 60000 miles and runs nicely apart from a bit of clutch judder.

Thanks in advance

Either you are dribbling a bit of oil onto the exhaust and not noticed it, or your shifter top boot is shredded to ribbons

What Saz as shown, top and bottom gear shaft seals need replacing buddy.

M-m

If not the gearchange boots, have you checked CAS O-ring?  I have the same issue on my white car, but know it’s because the O-ring is leaking.  Job for next weekend.

Cheers guys. I’ll get the tools out at the weekend to look close

No CAS O-ring on NB. There is a blank plug where the CAS would have been…

60k miles and clutch judder on a NB (not NB-FL) might mean a rather expensive oil leak.

Doh. Thanks Robbie.

Cheers Saz, spot on with the gear shift  boot and I recognized the smell when I got up close.

It had perished an split. I carried out a temporary repair with “bodge tape” to seal the cabin until I can find a replacement.

Do you know if the rubber boots can be replaceable or is the whole shift assembly replaced?

Cheers, thanks for the tip.

MX5parts sell the boot, plus the lower one (the bit that fits to the gearbox turret) for £32 the pair (pattern parts) or £40 for the genuine Mazda parts, complete with a new lower nylon bush. Easy 10 minute job. Clean out and top up the gearbox turret oil, and you’ll have a shift quality like new.

Thanks again Saz. Ordered

All sorted now.

Both upper and lower boots replaced which has cured the hot oil smell.

It also fixed my hot left knee which I just thought was an mx5 thing.

Thanks again for the tip Saz
