Hi folks. The rear windscreen on my NB 2.5 Phoenix shattered during the cold spell when I switched on the rear de-mister. No-one will touch it apart from a couple of places who will replace the whole hood. I’ve seen the actual glass is sold separately on E-Bay etc from broken cars, so was thinking I could epoxy the second hand screen, glass only, into the original rubber seal which is still attached to my original hood. Does anyone have experience of this and can suggest a glue/sealant that would bond the glass to the rubber? Seems a decent £50 fix as opposed to a new soft-top, especially as my hood is in great condition…thanks.
The original hood does not use a rubber seal. It seems you have an aftermarket hood of a non-standard design so it’s a gamble another window is the same. I have known a claim on glass insurance be successful resulting in a new hood.
Thanks, it’s possible this is an aftermarket hood then, surprised my window shattered if that’s the case. Sadly Tesco Insurance won’t replace the hood as the cost of that would write off my car. They’ll pay for a second hand hood replacement but that would mean a very long journey for me, so might try the glass fix and if it doesn’t work then nothing lost. How is the glass fixed into the original vinyl roof on an NB then?
It is pressed in with a metal frame
Ah, thanks. I’ll need to go and check, as there’s a good chance that the metal frame is still there in my hood, in which case it i would I’d be epoxying the glass back into the frame…
Well, broken glass all scraped out of hood, old sealant removed with acetone, buffed up with sandpaper and new combined adhesive/sealant applied with a gun into hood window recess and 2nd hand glass (£35 from E-bay, thoroughly cleaned by self to remove old adhesive and hood vinyl) fitted. Going to let it cure for 48 hours, then apply more sealant if required. If it doesn’t bond properly, I guess I’m going to find out when lowering and lifting the hood, other than then, no real pressures on the glass during normal driving with hood up. I’ll report back either way in due course…
