NB steering wheel replacement

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NB
  2. I’m based near: __Swansea
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: replacing the 4 spoke steering wheel on my poverty spec NB with a 3 spoke Nardi one.
Is it an easy swap and is it possible without affecting the air bag

Which steering wheel is it? Can you send me a link please. As I’m thinking of changing mine. Not sure on the fitting side though

Not sure I’m able to post any links, sorry. Ive seen a 3 spoke wheel, and was just wondering what is involved in swapping them

It’s very straightforward. Centralise the steering wheel. Disconnect the battery, depress the brake pedal for a few seconds to get rid of any latent electrical energy, remove the 10mm bolt on either side of the steering wheel, lift off and disconnect the airbag (the two yellow halves of its connector just unclip), disconnect the horn connector from the hair spring unit. Then undo the central nut with a socket and tap round the wheel rim with a mallet to break the interference fit and pull it off.
As all the instructions say, fitting is the reverse sequence of removal.

I replaced mine with a two tone leather Nardi as the tatty 4-spoke wheel was the one thing I hated with a vengeance as its plastic outer layer was peeling off in parts when I bought my car 13 years ago.

Thank u

Thankyou for the reply. That wheel looks nice

Don’t worry if you need to be fairly energetic and forceful with the mallet - that is normal. One revision to the instruction sequence above: Loosen the central wheel nut but don’t take it off just yet as you may need to rotate the steering wheel to tap its perimeter effectively. When loosened, then centralise and finish its removal.
The matching gear knob was a bonus for me as the original’s “wooden veneer” had split a bit.
