NB top gets stuck half way - Help!

Did a bit of searching around the forum for an answer but couldn’t find anything really. The problem is that the top won’t fold down on my 2000 model NB car. It gets “stuck” about half way. I don’t want to force it and it doesn’t appear to be jamming the rear window.

Any suggestions? Cheers.

Spray wd40or similar on the hinges of the roof and work it in by moving roof up and down several times. The cold weather is probably affecting it also but if you put slight pressure on the glass as its folding down by putting your hand inside as its halfway down this will help.Work the wd40 in well first and it will be ok

Hmmm…I’ll give that a try. Already tried pushing on the window and it makes no difference. I feels like something just goes tight. Maybe it is the hinges. Cheers for your suggestions.

I’ve also come across this in my previous Mk2 with vinyl roof & glass screen; most noticeable when the vinyl’s cold & stiff (in warm weather I can just throw it back from the driver’s seat).

Probably more to do with the stiff vinyl; I used to jiggle or lift the glass screen while folding, that made it easier ( I did get the impression you could bend the screen by pushing too hard while folding so be careful!)

There is a return spring on the metal roof support frame, which can get weak. As you ease the roof back try pushing the front roof internal support bar back to help the spring to fold the roof so that the glass misses the rear roof support bar. As previous post be careful when folding the vinyl roof in cold weather, as it can be stiff and your’e more likely to damage it. I’ve got my hard top on now so I can’t send you any photos. I think there was a post, but it might have been a few years ago.

AS Above, it is the return spring on the rearmost bar that has gone weak, uprated springs are available

As you lower the hood pull the rearmost bar toward the front of the car and make sure no hood material is trapped between the bars, if you force it down you will split the hood.

is a link to my old car, the dark picture shows the relevant spring

Looks like a case of weak springs. Pulling forward on the rear most bar did the trick. Many thanks, chaps!

I’ve got a mk1, hood sometimes snags halfway up/down. check that all roof hinges are operating properly, and check that you haven’t left something in the well that the roof folds down into, for example a plastic coke bottle prevents the roof from folding properly, I know to my cost!

Cheers! Russ

It always does it when it’s cold.
