NC 3.75 reset Wrench / Spanner Light / Maintenance Monitor

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __2013 NC 3.75 Venture with TomTom Nav
  2. I’m based near: __Aberdeen
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __resetting the wrench / spanner light / maintenance monitor

Hi, I’ve searched this website and google for a way for me to turn my wrench light off, but to no avail. When I start the car it goes off along with all the other warning lights, but after a few miles it’s back on again. The light looks like a wrench and sits in the rev counter just above “zero revs”.

I believe it could be a maintenance monitor telling me to change the oil? The Nav system does not interface with the car mechanics so has no relevant menu settings that I can see. The top left button near the rev counter doesn’t do anything (I did read to press and hold it 5sec whilst starting the car). Except going to a Main Dealer (£££’s), I’m at a loss. Grateful for any help. Cheers

EDIT- Apparently Not!
Good spot by Phillip, hence why we have never seen it.:+1:

On a Mazda MX-5 NC 2013, the “spanner light” (also called a wrench light) indicates that your car is due for scheduled maintenance, typically meaning it’s time for an oil change or other routine service according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule; you should take your car to a mechanic soon to get the necessary service done.

Interestingly mine is a 2013 that “did have” the TomTom system but never ever saw that pop up.
Copied this for you.

To reset the service indicator on a 2013 Mazda MX-5 (NC), navigate to the “Applications” menu on your car’s display, then select “Vehicle Status Monitor”, followed by “Maintenance” and finally “Oil Change” where you can choose “Reset” to clear the service light; essentially, you need to access the maintenance menu on the infotainment system and select the option to reset the oil life monitor.

Key points to remember:

  • Access the menu: Use the car’s infotainment system to access the “Applications” menu.
  • Navigate to maintenance: Within applications, select “Vehicle Status Monitor” then “Maintenance”.
  • Select oil change: Choose “Oil Change” from the maintenance menu.
  • Reset function: Press “Reset” to clear the service indicator.

Hi. As far as I can tell, I don’t have an applications menu or a car display. Pls see my dash photo…

This is news to me, even on the later NC’s (UK markets) I doubt there’s a service check light.
Having done a few oil changes I’ve never had a spanner light warning come up for this.

It’s not a “Maintenance” light - it’s a “Malfunction” light.

Well spotted Philip! I’d better get it looked at. Cheers

From what I can gather, the Malfunction Warning Light may be related to a brake switch problem, are your brake lights working? Are you applying the brakes about 5 to 8 times before the light comes on? First quick check is the 10 Amp STOP fuse which is in the fuse box under the bonnet.

Edit… Just noticed that the Owners Manual extract posted by @Philip references the brake light switch.

I’ve not been able to correlate cause and effect, but braking a few times or perhaps hard braking might make the spanner light turn on. I’ll fit a new switch, see what happens and report back. Who would have thought…

Have you checked to see if the brake lights work?

Just checked now. Brake lights work on starting, driving and when the spanner light comes on. Perhaps there’s a bit too much resistance through the switch?

Hhmm, I’d suspect a wiring issue before the brake light switch then. Have you got cruise control?

Out of interest, we’re did you find this text?

As I and others had never heard or seen it, I googled it and it came up.
As it turned out it was false information.

“what is the wrench warning light on mx5 nc”

I have just checked my “Owners Manual” and found what Phillip posted.
"Warning/Indicator Lights 5-41 and 5-44 which gives the definition.
