NC 3.75, safe to jack from the diff?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __2014 NC
  2. I’m based near: __Orpington
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __jacking the rear safely

Very new owner here. Got the Haynes printed manual, did searches here and online. Still not sure if it is a good idea to jack it up from the diff. Mine has cooling fins underneath, don’t want to break anything.

Want to jack it up on all four, so it’s level to change gear and diff oils (already have those waiting)

Mazda says use the diff, yes, but would they actually do it themselves? Or would they just use a lift? I suspect the latter.

Then an old thread here shows pics of rubber bushings inside the diff housing, not sure if mine is the same though.

Any ideas welcome…

Use a block of wood to spread the load. Behind those fins is a solid area you can jack on. I use a small piece of 4x2 :+1:

Ah, so you can jack it up from behind the fins then?
Of course I’d use a block of wood - metal to metal, brrr…

Do they all have fins, or is it an LSD thing? I didn’t see any fins in NC guides to lift it

I don’t know, I have a 3.75 sport tech with lsd. Correction anyway and apologies for bad info, it was my previous car that had the block. On this I used the timber to spread the weight across the fins.

I’ve had it up many times now and no issues. :+1:

Yes it’s OK, Mazda suggests it.

Dean_S550’s pic shows it’s a steel diff casing, so plenty strong enough with some load spreading.

This is my NC 3.75 with an oak flooring off-cut as a tough wooden block, it’s centred under where the most diff metal is.
