NC Brakes?

Hi all! I’m aware my brakes are starting to look a little worse for wear and, as I’ve not had the car all too long, I’m thinking of changing over the discs and pads and wondered whether these would suffice;

Thanks in advance for your help! If there’s a considerably better brake kit for not a lot more money, I’d be glad to hear about it!

Not heard of Delphi before so can’t comment on quality etc. I replaced all the pads and discs on my NC last autumn. I bought the kit from MX5 Parts:

£161 so not much more than those on eBay. I can certainly recommend these. Been absolutely fine on mine. Unfortunately, it looks like they’re out of stock at the moment. Then again, if you’re going to the Spring Rally and can wait the extra couple of weeks, MX5 Parts will be there and may have some special deals for members on the day.

I have used Delphi branded pads and disks on a number of cars in the last 3 or 4 years and they are fine.

No better or worse than the MX5parts supplied non branded brake parts.

Just a few things if you are doing them yourself.

1) Remeber to grease the slidding wings the pads with ceramic grease and the sliding pins with red rubber grease.

2) You need a caliper winding in tool for the back but you can make do with a wide screwdriver with some luck.

Interesting seeing this thread, I could be after doing my brakes soon, need to inspect properly.

Looked them up, they have quite a few branches, 2 near me. They say they do click and collect, not sure whether they would be the ebay prices though.

EuroCarParts are usually well priced, and they quite often have a discount code.

I replaced all 4 corners on my MK3 last year for about £150.

That’s great, thanks for the prompt responses all! As for Eurocarparts, is it worthwhile going for the Brembo over Eischer and Pagid brakes? I can do all 4 corners, with their current discount code (30%) for £180+delivery.

Edit: there’s one ECP shop around the corner from me with all Brembo parts in stock. Therefore, can do for £180 total.

I fitted new rear discs and pads to all four corners supplied by Eurocarparts last year. Eicher brand, IMO, very good value! its personal preference though. My old rear discs looked very tatty, the new ones very smart  braking ( for me ) is excellent.

I fitted front and rear Brembo pads over the weekend bought from Eurocarparts for about £51 using the online discount code, the discs were fine. Got a good price on the caliper piston winding in tool at £6 delivered, used it on the front too. And while I’m on a roll 600mls of brake cleaner from Screwfix for just £3.75, I already had the correct lube.

Delphi are a world wide automotive component supplier, who were spun out of GM.  Bit of a confused history (look at Wikipedia), but fine OE quality.

Personally I tend to go to Eurocarparts and buy Pagid (or other OE quality stuff).  Personal opinion, I’d avoid ‘Eicher’ which is their own brand Indian made stuff.  Pal put a set of these pads and discs these on the back of his Golf and the discs and pads were in awful condition in a year. We’ve used Pagid discs and pads on that car several times (over 250k miles - he does a lot of miles) and they’ve been excellent.  You pays your money…

I’d also say invest in a caliper winding back tool for rear brakes. Well worth its money!  Not worth b*****ing about without one.  Just use a G clamp or bar clamp to push the front pistons back, but don’t push brake fluid out of the master cylinder when you do it.

Thanks JS. I’m sure I recognised Delphi as the OEM manufacturer for Renault brakes, as my previous car was a Clio. I vaguely remember them being used for Fords which goes hand-in-hand with your GM comment.

I think I’ve got to weigh up whether I’ll be getting £60 more value out of Brembo vs Delphi, or £20 more out of Brembo vs Pagid. I’m veering towards going with the higher end of the marque, and I can voice my opinions on them in due course. To be frank, anything is better than what’s currently on there…

Thanks once again, all. I’ll be looking at a calliper winding tool but I’m almost certain guys in work have one (they have everything and more - one is keen on rallying). If he doesn’t, I’ll get one then.
