NC Engine Replace/Rebuild

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 2.0
  2. I’m based near: London
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Tech Help

Hi guys,

I have just bought a NC PRHT project toy, it looks like it needs a engine. Who do you recommend to do a engine rebuild? I have thought a used replacement but it not sure whee to find one that does and the same issues as the one I have.

I have given thought to a 2.5 but want to play with the suspension, brakes etc before thinking about big power.

Thanks

Paw

I had my 96,000 mile engine rebuilt by a local specialist Scholar Engineering in Mendlesham in Suffolk.

Brilliant job, cost around £1,500, we were lucky as the only problem was the piston rings which weren’t holding compression, oil, you name it. The rest of the engine was virtually unmarked, no signs of wear at all.

It now gets on track fairly regularly and performs flawlessly.

Is the 2.5 not likely to improve driveability more than give big power??

@DuratecNC ??

I realise you’ve stated that a new engine needed but not really telling us what’s amiss with yours? The serpentine belt, tensioner and idler pulley’s have been known to be the producer of noises not unlike terminal engine failure when the bearings collapse? Easy way to test, if this is the case, is to temporarily remove the belt, start the engine and if noise disappears, job diagnosed. Less than £100 to replace with quality parts. :nerd_face:

That depends on what you do with it, but yes that sums up a basic swap with little to no mods.
It is a very torquey unit.
