NC LSD Rear diff

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 2012 Kuro
  2. I’m based near: Chester
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: LSD

Would someone in the know describe what noise a normally functioning LSD should make if any?
What noise would an LSD with a problem make?
I hear a low mechanical noise coming from the rear axle area when driving.
It doesn’t sound particularly loud or unhealthy but was wondering if what I was hearing was normal, having never driven a car with an LSD before.
Thanks and eagerly awaiting your considered replies.

I think you need to determine whether it’s definitely the diff noise or tyre/brake noise. Mechanical noise could be rear brakes binding, or one of them or even a bearing.

No difference in noise between regular diff and LSD unless you are hammering it through corners and the back end is trying to break away… Then, whatever noise the LSD might be making, would be totally drowned out by everything else that’s going on!

Thanks for getting back…yes I did consider whether it was bearing or brakes…looks like I’ll have to have someone look at it…

Still building up to that scenario…haha

A diff ‘going’ is a very pronounced whining noise, usually under load… Get to a higher pitch as vehicle speed increases… Independent of gear selected other than usually lower load in higher gear. Tends to ease off if you back off the accelerator but can continue to be noisy ‘engine braking’

Sounds like a straight cut mini gearbox… Except those were MEANT to sound like that lol.
