NC passenger window not working

The passenger window in my sister’s NC isn’t responding to the button, a while ago I got up all of the centre console and got to the circuit board controlling the buttons (I managed to half destroy the box in the process), I tried rejigging the connections. Sometimes I swear while holding it in certain positions I’ve got it to respond for a split second to the switch…

I’m thinking of finding a second hand circuit board for the window switches but is this a common issue that people know of where something else could be to blame? Do the window motors go bad for example?

I don’t have access to the car very often so it would be nice to get XYZ parts ready and just replace the lot of potential culprits in one go.

Cheers.

You may as well obtain a complete switch unit and swap it out as I get the impression you may have disturbed something when messing with the switch. Different switches for retractable hardtop model and soft top and also between model years.

Is it a soft top or PRHT?

I’ve heard of a few electric window switch failures on the NC - basically, over time (presumably due to continual heating up / cooling down of the circuit board within the switch) some of the soldered joints between the components & the board can fracture.

On the model with the folding hardtop, this issue can also cause problems with the roof operation because the windows automatically drop slightly at the beginning of the “roof down” & “roof up” processes; the signal from the roof ecu to the windows is wired through the window switch, so if the windows don’t drop then the roof won’t move.

Replacement switches I believe are available from MX5 Parts - & as Bettabuilda says the switches vary between different years & also whether it’s the soft-top or folding hardtop version of the car.

As others have said, there are different switch units for different models but I have a PRHT and had the issue with the passenger window not working.

I took the switch apart and found the DPU pin’s solder was cracked and, after research, this seems to be a common fault.

I re-flowed the solder and problem went away but I wanted to find out why this is a common problem with the DPU pin/terminal.

On inspection of the switch case and where the pin is located when it is assembled, I realised that there is a shoulder of plastic in the case which touches the DPU terminal so vibration/pressure gets to the pin, separate from the whole board getting vibrations.

I shaved a bit of the plastic off and all seems fine now.

Might be just mine but thought I’d pass this on as a way to save buying an expensive, and probably flawed, new switch.

It’s a soft top '07 NC for reference.

Cheers guys, so maybe this is something I could fix myself, I might just ask my sister if she wants to buy a whole replacement switch though to save me having to take the unit out of her car and then take it back to Glasgow with me to repair…

So we don’t think this is likely to be anything to do with the passenger window motor?

My sister has ordered the new part but it’s currently out of stock, hopefully it comes back in stock soon though and we can try it out…
