NC Power Steering Fluid Change

Hi, Want to change the fluid, what is the quantity needed and best way to drain? TIA

I cannot remember ever seeing a power steering fluid change on any car services schedule but there must be a car that has it on it’s service schedule.

I have replaced a couple of pumps on a few cars and they usually take less than 1 litre in all cases the replacement was not due to the pump failing but usually an external hit on the pully that damaged the bearing.

You have to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a good few times to bleed the system after filling.

Just find the lowest point on the system that has a hose or pipe connection and undo it with something there to catch the fluid.

I read somewhere that the best way to do this would be to drop one of the hoses from the reserviour, and drain out what you can.

Refit the hose, plug the return pipe and then start the car, turning lock to lock, which will fill the reservour again, allowing you to drain off further.

Plugging the return pipe stops the fluid from going back around the system.

They did also suggest not to run it for prolonged periods without fluid, as this could damage the pump.

Maybe a less messy solution might be to empty the res with a syringe, clamp the return hose, start the car, turn lock to lock.

empty with the syringe again, then refill.
