NC Sport 2006 - anti roll bar mount nuts

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC 2006 Sport

Hi Guys - looks like a previous owner has rounded off the nuts holding the front anti roll bar mounts.
Clearly I am going to need to cut them off to swap bushes.
And then fit brand new nuts.

Would anyone know the thread size of these nuts - or a mazda part number - so I can get new ones before starting the job.

Cheers

Hmm, I don’t know the size. But to get the rusted nuts off something like this nut splitter is a simple tool that usually works.

You might also need an appropriate die and stock to clean up the rusty thread before fitting the new nut.

But beware there are a lot of fakes on the market with soft metal that simply give up, and I don’t know if this one is any good either.

I made the mistake of lending my forty-odd-years old Beargrip set of five to a ‘friend’ a decade or so ago. He promptly emigrated to NZ taking all ‘his’ tools with him.

Id go down the line of using a ’ nut easy out’
Looks like a normal socket but with a fin type internal design which digs into the part your removing.

They work a treat…believe me
Measure whats left of the nut then use approx size easy out.

Threads maybe m10 …but dont quote me on that one.

Cheers Richard - I have nut splitters - Rounded nut removal sockets - hacksaw and even a dremel.
Getting the nuts off should not be an issue.

I was just hoping to get new nuts ready before starting the job so the car was straight back on the road.

Cheers Palerider - I already have rounded nut removal sockets ( and the power tools to make them work effectively.)

Main part of the question was what size are the nuts.
I was just hoping to get new nuts ready before starting the job so the car was straight back on the road.

I think they may be M8x1.25, flanged nuts, 14mmAF. If I recall correctly from changing the drop links and arb’s on mine they all used the same fixings for OEM parts but I could be wrong. Certainly the aftermarket drop links had bigger fixings than the original parts. If they are the same I have 6 in my box of removed bits.

Alben is right, they’re just standard M8 thread.
The studs are known to shear off when rusty btw so watch out for that.

That is why I intend cutting them off ( nut splitter or dremel )
Then chase the thread with a die
and fit new nuts.

They are fine pitch studs, so M8x1.0, as for all the fasteners i.e. fine pitch. So nuts from B&Q won’t work. I cut mine off so replaced the stud (has to be drilled out because it is welded in) with a M8x1.25 M8.8 bolt nut and washer. As far as I can deduce, flanged nuts are used to save the time in production of fitting washers.

For future reference - and to save anyone else the frustration.

The front anti roll bar bush mounting nuts are M10 x 1.25 Flanged.

Whoops, too small, but still fine thread

Wow, what a joy!

Hi there, out of interest, say two of those nuts were to sheer off a particular NC and on top of that the larger 19mm bolt on the cross bracing has also completely stripped, not due to rust either but just will not turn :man_facepalming:t2: what would someone have to do in that situation?? The fact the 19mm bolt won’t budge is obviously keeping it all together but I’m worried that the two bolts with the sheered nuts, are these structural? Can I drive it on track?? asking for a friend……I wish
