hi all
my CD player doesn’t work, so I’ve managed to pick up a second hand unit (non Bose) and had a go at swapping them over this afternoon. I found a video on Youtube to show me what to do, but the vids is for a LH drive, and the config of nuts on the side of the unit to help remove it isn’t the same.
any advice out there please, its my first attempt on doing something to my newly owned MX5 so really keen to have a bash myself

Are you talking about the security securing bolt or the actual head unit securing screws.
The YouTube vids show how to remove the one 10mm bolt, it’s drivers side up the side of the unit accessed by removing the panel under the steering column. It’s a faff actually seeing it and you need a long extension bar with your 10mm socket. Use maybe a torch and head for the side of the unit up under the dash.
If the head securing screws they are hidden behind the two triangular side covers either side of the lower centre dash piece. Once removed (they pull off towards the gear shift) you will see a screw on each side holding the radio in.
Now if that security bolt has never been fitted the radio should just pull out with a sharp tug. If it doesn’t pull out then obviously go to the 10mm bolt.
See how you go.
Btw I wouldn’t bother putting the 10mm bolt back if one fitted.
Oh and do disconnect the battery before commencing.
Hi Chris B just wondering if that worked. I’m looking to swap a duff Bose unit with a none Bose unit on my mk3.
hi, yes it worked a treat, found a 2nd hand one with a working CD on eBay, and just swapped over. It was really easy
The Bose unit uses an external amp and different speakers therefore will have a different harness. You will need adaptor leads as used with non Bose aftermarket headunits to fit an non Bose unit - I think…
I never use the cd player.
I have a gizmo that the music on my phone bluetooths to, which then inputs to the head unit via the aux in socket.
The quality is better then via the head unit cd and my entire cd collection is recorded on the phone and at my fingertips.
which gizmo do you use?
A cheap Chinese one.
You can get a nice one branded Alpine that adds DAB radio as well
ebay?
Yup
which one is it, do you have a link? i need something decent too
This one plugs into the power socket and is a very tight fit.
It’s called a T11 Bluetooth transmitter but there are loads of them on ebay and this one may not still be available.
As I said, it works very well when hardwired. However, I wouldn’t bother with one of these used to transmit to an FM radio channel as the quality really suffers.
BTW, it also works for hands free telephone calls and it comes with a USB lead to connect to your aux in socket

I’ve got similar, now in the drawer unused. It worked well, DAB radio (extra aerial needed) USB and micro SD card slots, Bluetooth for phone connection. Great little unit with a downside, it needed a few cables to connect it up and working to my satisfaction. It can be tuned in to the stock radio frequency but I had an irritating hiss through the speakers, best plugged in to the unit via the 3.5 jack lead. Then you need the aerial lead for DAB to work.
The whole unit plugs into the 12v socket.
It made me reconsider my options because I had a dashcam and standalone sat nav to consider and where do I plug them in, more cables too. I just ripped it all out and fitted a new aftermarket head unit that can do the lot, no more cables apart from the dab aerial, now hidden behind the dash and the separate dash cam is now hard wired.
Anyone wishing to try my old unit are welcome to it, it does the job.
