NC - What's the best backbox exhaust?

Hello everyone!

Love my mk3 sports tech mx5 and was wanting a better sound. What backbox exhaust is best in terms of noise as well as price?

Thank you.

That’s a tough one because what sounds great to one man might not sound so good to another…
I personally I’ve had a Cobra road back box on mine for around 14 months and it sounded absolutely fine.
Then my OEM midpipe died where it wasn’t fixable so I replaced it with a custom stainless option with a 200 cell cat in.
It sounds even better now.
I also have an IL 4-1 manifold and mapping which I’m aware adds to the soundtrack also.
Quite a few variables all told so as I say, it’s how I like it but not everyone will.
It is quite droney with the lid up on a motorway but I don’t drive it that often in that situation so it doesn’t do my head in.
When the Cobra dies, I have a Cobalt in my shed to replace it. I’ve no idea how that’s going to sound as yet…

Well… If you want to have a smile every single time you drive your car…

(The only downside it ain’t cheap)

I know :joy:

What they say that if you like your car you turn around to look at it after you parked… totally true :relaxed:

I’m having a crush with the darn thing

Hopefully I’ll be doing that after a visit my visit to BBR on Thursday

Thanks for the responses! Decided to go and get the cobra race type exhaust and comes 21st of February! Will share some videos when it arrives. Mega excited!

This is probably the best mod, does sound as well power. I had a cobalt backbox on its own and hardly noticed it but cobalt with the IL 4-1 is a nice combo. You might end up with some quite loud pops when you change between 1st and 2nd under acceleration. It’s not obnoxious though but I never have the roof down so might be quite loud with it down.

What camera mount do you use? I like the “floaty” video style.

The “floaty” video style is actually the stabilization settings on the GoPro 10. I use the activity pre-set but on 60fps and it effectively creates a video like that.

Re mount for my GoPro I bought it from amazon (I’d say its identical to RAM mounts - but probably Chinese made). I wanted to use a secure clamp so there is no chance of it coming off while driving but I had to design and 3d print a part that effectively has the same shape of the wind deflector and would spread the load from the clamp onto a bigger area on the wind deflector.

this is the mount

Wow, in that case I’m impressed with the GoPro’s stabiliser system. I thought you had it on some sort of gimbal.

Nope, and the other great thing with a GoPro it also record gps, and acceleration data embedded in the video. You can extract this data and post process it to create lap times, position, acceleration, speed for track days etc.
