Hi, whilst washing my 55 plate NC I noticed a piece of rubber on the floor under the car. It seems that I had dislodged a piece of edge protector trim about 70cm long. It resembles the stuff you can get to stick on door edges but is not sticky, well it isn’t now! I took off one from the other side and it seems that it’s only purpose was holding mud and gunk around the arch lip. Which I’ve now cleaned out using a toothbrush and fingers:)
Has anyone come across this before? Is it a good thing to protect against stone chips whilst holding in mud / water etc? I don’t think they are a factory option?
Any opinions much appreciated.
Kind regards
Marc
I didn’t notice any on mine, I’ve had the arch liners off twice on the rear.
I have given the arches a coating of Hammerite, two coats at the lip because those liners may rub the paint.
Definitely none of those lip trims on my NC2
Hi Marc, not had anything like you have described on either of my NC’s. It’s most likely a previous owners attempt to protect the edge of the arch? When buying my latest NC, I looked at loads and always got my hand up in that area, amazing how much accumulated road debris there was in the majority of cases. Moisture lingers there and rust can result. I’ve seen several cases of arch rust “blisters” starting to form on these cars if not attended to. You’ve obviously cleaned out those areas and I presume you won’t be refitting those edge protectors?

If it helps I did this to mine, pics below.
Removed arch liners painted with Hammerite up under the arch and the inner part of the lip. No rust found there, it was a precautionary treatment. The lip you can see I had a couple of bits with surface bubbling of the paint, about finger nail size on both arch lips. I decided to treat the surface rust then paint with epoxy mastic, cover with grey primer (a light sanding inbetween coats) then finish in body colour. You find it hard to see where I’ve been with the treatment but it’s future protecting the vunerable parts prone to rust.
Thanks all for your replies. Most useful. Certainly won’t be refitted and I’ll have a very good look for any rust starting. Take care
Marc
I painted the wheelarch lips with black underseal shortly after I got the car (8 years ago) - not very noticeable as the bodywork’s dark blue. Still no rust.
