NC2 = External Ambient Temp sensor wiring - anyone know the path it takes?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC2
  2. I’m based near: Edinburgh
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Wiring / Electrics

My car had been off the road for about 6 months having various bits of work done, none of which should have gone anywhere near the external ambient temp sensor, but sadly on getting the car back and turning the ignition on, the external temp reading goes -40 degrees, and then just to three dashes —.

So i thought, maybe its the sensor, but replacing it didnt help, and actually, even unplugged, the issue is the same, so it feels like theres a short / break in the wiring somewhere. I suspect a break, as this feels like open circuit reading (minimum / out of range).

But following the wire, it comes up under the air intake, and then disappears into a huge bundle of wires on the fuse box and then god knows where!

Where does that wire eventually end up? is it intercepted by the ECU, or is it a direct feed to the back of the dash (e.g. could I run a fresh cable to the cluster).

Any help appreciated, as this being broken, means my heating system is either off, or full blast, which is inconvenient!

What’s your VIN?
