NC2 Mk3.5 Underside Engine Guard Plastic insert? Do I need them?

Below is some weird bits I have found under my NC2 - they are badly fitting plastic inserts that seem to badly plug the biggest holes in the front underside bolt on engine guards? I have never seen these on any other MX-5 underside photos?

Any idea why they are on my car and if I need them or not?

Cheers,

Richard.

They cover up holes. They don’t generally latch very well but Mazda must have fitted them for a reason.

The covers are there to help airflow remain as smooth as possible under the car for both aerodynamic and heat management reasons.
The principle is the faster air under the car helps remove the hot engine bay air that exits around the gearbox.
One covers the oil filter that is quite low and gives it a bit of protection.
The actual flaps by themselves probably don’t contribute much but it is better to have them in place. There are companies that will sell you plates to fill in the holes. https://lrbspeed.com/product/nc-mx-5-miata-aero-filler-panel/
