Nc3 chrome door handle trim removal?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: nc 3.75
  2. I’m based near: kent
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: removing chrome from outer handle grab

Hi,
Does anyone have any experiences with removing the chrome inserts on the outer handles? I wondered if they are simply held on with adhesive tape from the factory and will a hairdryer and credit card do the job? Also, is the handle painted underneath the chrome trim and no mounting holes?

Thanks in advance.

They’ll be stick on jobbies, don’t think any NC came with them on, so aftermarket fitment. Had them on my last NC, previous owner had applied them.

Thanks Mick, I’ll get the hairdryer on them. They look nice but chrome isn’t my thing. Cheers again :+1:

The Launch Edition NC came with them fitted. Weirdly, some other editions had the main insert fitted on the handle but omitted the small rear part. Easy to remove.

:+1: I’ll be on that later. Hopefully doesn’t pull any paint off or they’ll be going straight back on.

Hmm, you might have an unsightly recess and not a smooth handle. Look closely before surgery…

See for example the standard handle on my NC Niseko where the chrome bit really is an insert and not just stuck onto a plain handle.

That’s exactly what mine is like. Might leave it for now then but it won’t be long before it’s the only chrome on the car, then either through removal or paint it will have to go.

The recess is no deeper than what is showing on the rear part of your handle picture. Nothing to fear. :ok_hand:

Fair enough. But IMHO the bare recess will still be ugly.

Well I had a go and it won’t budge. I put a lot of heat into it to loosen any adhesive but couldn’t get a credit card behind it to initially break the bond and didn’t want to continue and possibly damage the surrounding paint.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks so far.
