ND 2016 - Advice before buying

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __2016 Sport Nav
  2. I’m based near: __Lincolnshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Underside before buying

So ive been to look at an ND today an dall looks great apart from a delaminated ICE screen and a few marks on the bodywork. However when looking underneath it looks okay to me but having heard that the underside can be a nighmare for corrosion can someone look at the image attached and say whether it looks okay or not?

The car is a 2016 car and otherwise in good condition. I guess the screen replacement can be done without too much problem.

Looks surprisingly good for a '16 if it was used ‘as a car’. How many miles are on it?

That looks absolutely fine for a car that is 8/9 years old. It would clean up very nicely with a bit (a lot) of elbow grease.

The screen is expensive if you get Mazda to replace it but Aliexpress has a DIY solution that is cheap but you need to be good with your hands. If it from a garage get them to do the screen as part of the deal. If it is a private sale get some mone nocked off.

14,300 miles. Mazda serviced up to 2020 then I dependant dealer each year since then but only oil and filter changes done. What is the recommendation for the gearbox oil?

It’s a dealer but not Mazda. I’ve found a guide online of how to change the screen and doesn’t look too complicated, famous last words.Have said if they can’t do it then would need the price dropping.

Built my own Kitcar so okay working on cars. When you say to tackle the underside, what is the recommendation of how to do it. More than happy to do the work underneath, I just need to know what others have done and what to use etc.

Yes, I thought the miles might be low.
Gearbox oil. Personally I’d go to Mazda and get them to do it (asking if they use the correct oil/Mazda gives them, and not just some random from a drum). I say that as the ND box seem picky with grades. Have a read on here of multiple users who have had success or poor results across gearbox oils. When mine was done at 5 years at Mazda, it was even better.
This is an interesting video. Well worth a watch. And note he also mentioned he used an ‘alternative’ (Millers) often mentioned on here and seems to say it was naff.

Note also he correctly says the factory grade is 75W-80. He asked Mazda, and they said the same to me when I was back and forth with emails to them, too.

Gear box is 5 years. It would be wise to change it and the diff oil at the same time.

You need to start with a degreaser and cloths. Some heavy duty cleaner and water would be good and once you have removed the ‘grime’ some wire brushes to get any surface rust away. After this it depends on how keen you are. Some would go rust converter and paint others might be happy just to use something like Duck Oil Swarfega Duck Oil Multi-Purpose Lubricant, Rust Protector, Releases Rusty Bolts, Light Degreaser, Silicone Free, 5L Can : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools and top it up on a regular basis.

Brilliant information, just what I needed. Thanks very much. Will definitely get those both done as I makes sense if you are not sure, for the longevity and piece of mind.

I used this in my gearbox and found the results very good, a nice smooth change after.

where do you get the Ideal that nd’s are a nightmare for corrosion

Just from what I’ve read from a few posts that it is wise to get the underside protected properly otherwise they can corrode badly underneath due to road salt.

For what it’s worth,I looked at a 15,000 mile, 2016 ND last week. Also had screen delamination in the corners. This was the underneath:

If it helps anyone, mine has lived almost its life under a Mazda half cover (not literally, minus airing it and driving it etc), and my summer '18 ND, touch wood, hasn’t got any delamination. Maybe as its been in ‘shade’ (under the cover) all it’s life minus driving is the reason :person_shrugging:

Looks better than my 17K, '18 ND, which over the last 4 years has pretty much seen no rain or salt, and in the early days didn’t see that much, relatively either (and would get hosed underneath regularly etc). I’m not by the coast or anything too.

I’ve just bought a late 2015 ND1, yours looks as good as mine underneath, mines had underseal from new though. Looks like yours will need some too to keep it protected, I reckon it won’t take too much prep for that, very little bits of rust poking through, it’s pretty good actually.
Get all the oils changed, brake fluid etc if you don’t know it’s full history and what’s been used previously. I wonder if the tyres are original, check the dates on them. Mine were original 2015’s with 23k miles on, I had to fit new only last week.
I think you need to buy it if the price and everything else’s checks out ok.:+1:

My 2020 has been garaged apart from driving it for the last 30 months and I now have the delamination on the screen

That certainly looks very good and very similar to the one I have looked at. I guess it depends on when/where driven and if previously protected. Just that I had read that others had said that if driven during the winter months or left out the underside could be at risk from corrosion.

Yep, sounds good. Good shout on the tyres, one thing I hadnt checked. Oils and filters were something I was going to do as a matter of course just so I know the state of them.

I have found a guide online that takes you through step by step in replacing the screen. Aliexpress do the screen for £10 which I was very sceptical about but those that have used it seem to suggest that it works well and not an issue.
