ND backbox / muffler gasket

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ 2017 ND RF
  2. I’m based near: __Colchester
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Backbox Gasket

I have just purchased a second hand Goodwin Racing Race exhaust and wondered if the backbox gasket needs to be changed when I swap them over. Link to the part below -

MX-5 Parts

It depends… (helpful I know) on the condition of the existing one. Also replacements are available elsewhere at significantly less cost.

Ah didn’t realise it was a universal part. Well if I can get one for £5, then I might as well replace it. Are there any measurements for what I need to buy?

Pretty sure it’s 2.5”/63.5mm.

Found the part number - RFK2-40-581

And this is what I bought - https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/fa1-2970090.html

measurements were slightly different being:

Inner Diameter: 54mm
Diameter: 70mm
Thickness: 16mm

Will see if this fits and will come back to this post to update. Goodwin’s site also says it should be replaced when changing the backbox if it’s done more than 20k miles (Mines 23k).

I went ahead and fitted the backbox without changing the gasket as it has still yet to arrive. I didn’t want to try pulling the old one off as it might have lost its seal.

Interestingly, the internal diameter on the flange of the Goodwin Racing Race exhaust is much bigger so it doesn’t even touch the gasket, just covers it which is strange. I was worried there would be leaks as it’s basically just metal to metal but I’ve not noticed anything after driving around for a week. Lots of condensation at the tip but nothing at the joint, also very quite when cruising so seems to be okay.
