ND Door Sill Plates

Hi all.

The metal part of my 2016 RHD door sill plates (scuff plates?) have bent away and now I keep catching it with my foot when I get in the car, making it worse.

Does anyone know how these are fixed/attached to the car? I assume some kind of adhesive. I am thinking of taking of completely, bending back to shape, and then re-attaching (somehow).

Does that make sense? Anyone tackled this a different way?

The whole plastic trim comes off with a tug, the scuff plates are attached. You may be able to see how they are fixed - probably double sided tape but worth a look underneath the plastic trim.

You need to remove the whole trim as described above, pull them vertically.
With the trim in your hand attach some additional double sided tape to the underside of the metal piece. It is a bit fiddly. (The whole of the metal trim is attached with double sided tape.) Then you need to bend/form the metal back into the shape of the plastic trim. You have to over bend it by flexing the plastic. The metal will bend and stay but the plastic will spring back to its original shape. Eventually they will be the same shape again and the tape will stick.
I have successfully done both sides on our car. It take time, care and patience.
I think that they separate when you use the sill to help getting in and out.
Sorry if my description iffy

Makes sense Malc, thank you. Any idea on what tape to use? I assume it would need to be thin, as the metal itself is only a centimeter or so wide at it’s narrowest point?

Any 3m tape the right width should do it , but guess you are catching your shoe on it , which caused the plate to lift. You could use Tiger Seal to glue it on , but either way make sure you prep and clean the surfaces to get best adhesion.

Very narrow 3m.

I think he means 3m tape not 3mm

Mine have lasted 6 years, which I’m surprised at, as I don’t think they give you much sticky tape even when new. Malc’s idea sounds good. I would add that I tried using the narrowest 3m double sided tape on some other car, and didn’t rate it at all. I can’t recall how narrow it was (tiny), maybe 5mm, but personally I’d stay stay from that size. Good luck whatever method you choose.
