ND entertainment screen Delamination

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND2 2.0L
  2. I’m based near: Dunstable
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: ICE screen delamination
I bought the car over 2 years ago, the car is just coming up to 5 years old.
I have noticed that the screen is just starting the delamination process that seems a common fault.
My question is whether it’s worth going back to the Mazda dealer I bought the car off in Jan 23 as this seems to be a known fault? (Under the consumer sales act)?
Or do I just suck it up and try to repair it myself?

I’m looking at doing the same repair in the coming weeks as the delamination on mine is now starting to get too large. I have previously added/upgraded the USB hub to use Android Auto/CarPlay and the process of reaching the display is time consuming but not hard. I am planning on doing the work myself, reading on here it seems people are happy with glass purchased from AliExpress so I will do that too.

I don’t know how much you can expect from the Mazda dealer as it has been quite a while since you bought the car. Might be worth giving them a call but I wouldn’t expect much out of it. On the upside the parts are cheap and the job is fairly easy.

I would not waste my time with approaching the dealer after 2 years.

If you are happy to have a go at this type of thing and are reasonably handy, the job is relatively straightforward with watching the videos and following the online instructions. My replacement screen cost about a tenner and the replacement looks better to me as it is is more glossy rather than matt. The only hold up for me was never having used ribbon connectors before, I didnt know how to release them so did some googling before I figured it out.

Here is the new one;

Thanks Simon,
Never used Ali Express.
Am I looking for a certain part number?
Or a generic ND2 screen?
Is it the screen/glass/or touchscreen that’s at fault?

Many thanks

Rob

I have an ND1 and this is the item I bought;

Not sure if its the same for an ND2 so best to ask that question before buying.

Have a read of the instructions to get an idea of the job. The part you are refitting is all one unit as you get the screen and digitiser already bonded.

Screen change guide

I have read that mazda did not bond them properly at the factory so they expand differently? I have not heard of anyone having it happen again once they have changed the screen.

I use AE a lot (but for cheap stuff) and have always got refunds if there has been a problem. They have really improved delivery and it is all flown over now rather than ships in the old days!

Thanks ever so much.
Yep, I know it’s all flown over as I have a mate of mine who works for a company whose sole work is to fill 5 A340s with all the Chinese cheap c**p to fly to the Uk, with daily flights.

If anybody has the link to the correct item on ali/fleabay/Amazon/where ever for a 2020 ND2 I would be most grateful.

So I can find on Ali Exp a 50 pin screen rather than the 36 pin that seems to be for 2015-19 NDs but there are several different resoloutions
Any ideas anyone for a 2020 screen?

I don’t wish to derail 787’s thread - and I hope that you got an answer to your part query for the ND2 - but I have volunteered to undertake the screen replacement on behalf of a friend who has recently acquired a 65-plate ND1. Part ordered and am awaiting delivery.

The website linked above seems comprehensive in detailing the access and replacement processes.
Query: Before I wreak havoc on someone else’s car, does anyone have any additional tips, tricks, or advice regarding the screen replacement process?

TIA.

No problem here!

Nope, not found a solution yet. The delamination has stopped after its initial appearance but less than 1cm square in top left corner.

Mazda were , despite the known Technical Directive, said “its outside 3 years so you are on your own.”

The dealer I bought the car from has offered a fix and labour for £444, part alone £375.

Still cannot find an ND2 2020 replacement screen on Ali/Fleabay etc😫

Completed the process, which is precisely as described in the link provided in this thread.

Back in the car:

Total cost: £15, and a bit of stress and swearing.

I’ve read one comment saying the replacement screen is much clearer/sharper, is it?
For that price I may order one just in case mine fails, it’s ok ATM after 10 years.

Is the new screen hyper glossy?

Hello @MickAP, this is not my car. I have a NC and was doing this job for a friend. Therefore, I cannot really comment on whether the screen is any clearer or sharper as I have no personal experience of using the display in a ND.

To @germcevoy query, the replacement is certainly a shiner display; the original display was a matte/non-glossy finish.

When he collected the car, the owner was of the view that he preferred the glossier display, but could just have been polite

Mazda may have made it matt as less chance of reflections with the top down maybe? I havent had a problem with it though and much prefer the look.
I dont think it is necessarily sharper but it just looks more premium to me.
Here is my screen before (compared to after in post 3 above)

Look at the reflection on the screen of my phone to see the effect of the new screen (also visible in jingars before and after shots).

Unsure whether it was beneficial, but the one point at which I deviated from the link’s process was in the removal of the existing delaminated screen from the bezel.

I was concerned about cosmetically damaging the bezel with a pry tool when seeking to effect an entry at the start of the screen removal process, so I dropped the bezel into a pan of warm/steaming water in the hope that it would soften the glue.

I then attempted the removal of the existing screen from the “back”, being careful to check that I didn’t put too much stress on the bezel. Unsure if the process above helped any, but it did manage my blood pressure somewhat.

This approach got me a start of a separation between screen and bezel. I finished the separation by using a plastic pry bar from the “front” as per the link’s instructions.

Good to see that people can fix their screens but I’m still unable to find the correct screen for my 2020 ND2.

If anyone has a link to the correct part I would really appreciate it

I feel guilty at my hijack of your thread, @787driver - my apologies.

I imagine that your searching has come up with the same as mine:

Mazda North America TSB on the topic, giving part numbers

Miata.net thread from 2024 where forum members there are also struggling to find pattern replacement parts for the 50-pin setup

I understand that the ND2 needs the 50 pin screen rather than the 36 pin for the ND1 so probably one like these;

or

Neither of these ads state model year which is what you really want. I notice that they state different screen resolutions which seems odd as they must come from the same manufacturer?

Not sure if it is possible to ask the seller on aliexpress before you buy to cover yourself?

You may need to start a separate thread though to get confirmation and a link from someone who has done their ND2?
