Evening Kenny… Am sorry to see this experience of MX-5 ownership hasn’t been a good one.
Take your refund and put it down to bad luck - it does happen…!
Looks like the gearboxes are largely fine on both ND1 & ND2 with 1.5 engines, but with the 2.0, the ND2 is a safer bet. You got a result today, so sleep on it and happy searching for something new - Hope you don’t give up on the MX-5… It has it’s flaws, but so do most cars…!
Rob
I’m so pleased that you have successfully rejected the car and got your money back.
Every car has its potential issues, some more so than others, and really, apart from the fact there’s no direct competitor to it, the MX5 is actually an extremely reliable car.
The %age of gearbox failures is tiny, and on the ND 2 in particular, this minuscule risk can be largely mitigated by changing the gearbox oil once a year (£100?)
I do hope you enjoy whatever you end up buying as a replacement, but imho there’s nothing under £50k that comes close the the engaging and useable driving experience that the MX5 offers.
Sorry to hear that.
Maybe a Fiat or Abarth 124 which has the more reliable NC gearbox?
Which dealer was it out of interest?
Hi Kenny
I had a ND1 2litre ,and now have a ND2 2litre,the ND2 is a totally different car to the ND1 in lots of ways, just seems overall more finished off and correct all through design and engineering wise, like the ND1 was rushed out to meet a date which the 2 litre was certainly regards the gearbox,my ND1 gearbox was lovely i had no problems but i did not really thrash it because of the known gearbox problems i did not allow my son to track day it,but the ND2 gearbox is better still feels totally more smooth rifle bolt .action etc.
Hang in find a good ND2 and you will enjoy it Simon
My 2017 (April) ND1 1.5 is one of about the last 300 or so with the original gearbox. Should I be worried?
Hi Sammy… 1.5’s are generally OK I think. I’d say no, but how do you feel it drives?
Rob
They did! Well, in the FIAT 124 version
Barrie
Cheers for that, mentioned it up a bit. Enjoy the weekend.
How does it drive? I wish I knew - it has done about 500 miles in the last eighteen months. It only has 4,500 miles on it at 4 years old.
Sunny weekend get out there!
