ND infotainment screen display speed?

Hi there
I am planning to go to france at the end of sept. Last time I took the 5 abroad I found it a bit tricky to compute mph dial on ND to kmh. Only backup was sat nav but even google maps speed is displayed quite small. is there a way to get the infotainment screen to display vehicle speed in kph nice and clearly.

Have you tried Waze. It displays speed at all times, even when not navigating. Easy to switch between MPH and KPH.
Get to the desired speed and hit the limiter, no need to look again till the next speed setting.

When I went to France my ND showed the limits (the little sped sign on the dash showed eg an 81 sign from memory) and recalculated my overspeed alarm accordingly - I have set at +5mph
Pretty sure Google maps was on Km too? The speedo has km markings anyway.

Hi. The issue I have with the speedo KM is they are tiny and not easily and quickly viewed.

The google maps Speedo displays in km but also tiny especially when required to glance to side and down to see it

I have come across these two posts which is my ideal but unfortunately I’m not a coding master so can’t take the risk. Sounds like Mazda things sold a module but it was unreliable on anything other than ND1 so pulled it while they work on it

Mx5 cluster hack

And Mazda tweaks coding hack for cluster which allows and includes speedo app

Infotainment hack

Also the speed alarms are generally ok in my experience when the sign say 30 - 50 etc but utterly useless at detecting national speed limit signs so your contantly barked at on the best roads as it’s still registering previous speed sign having not recognised national speed sign

Oh - my bonger is fine with nat speed limits, even knows if it’s 60 or 70. In theory you shouldn’t accelerate until past the sign anyway :joy:

This video seems pretty helpful on the mazdatweaks. The UI looks fairly friendly on laptop. So maybe I’ll be able to implement the Speedo on info screen afterall

The speedo function didn’t work correctly at the end of the vid

Get yourself one of these. I have the MPH version attached to my dash between the Mazda screen and the instrument panel. Big digits, GPS so accurate speed. Much easier to read than the standard speedo.

This looks like it could be ideal. Out of interest how do you hold it in place?

A small piece of scrap black plastic under the front to get the angle right and double sided tape. Easy to see the speed by just glancing across without completely taking your eyes off the road.

These units are available in km/h and MPH versions but they aren’t switchable. Check the small print on any listing to make sure you get the right one. First one I bought had MPH in the title but km/h in the small print.

great and presumably just plugged into the USB in front of the gearstick? does it need to be plugged into USB to run or does it have some battery power?

USB powered, no internal battery. I’ve got a double USB power adapter plugged into the footwell socket powering this and a dashcam but will work fine in one of the two USBs in the centre console.

As a backup, just multiply the speed signs by 6 (then drop the last zero) and you will be on the safe side. 50 kph x 6 = 30mph (actual conversion is 31.6mph).
I used this all the time on an imported motorbike before we had all this tech

Thanks useful rule of thumb.

I’ve ordered a plug in kmh gps and am also going to attempt installing some Mazda tweaks mods on the head up display so while I’m at it I’ll pop the speedometer on there too and see if it works.

It’s too tempting to update the screen with better background graphics, menu loop functions , removing the annoying start up warnings and enabling the touch screen above 6mph

Out of interest where is the footwell socket can’t say I’ve ever noticed it?

Look deep into the passenger footwell, high up to the right

Enabling the touchscreen above 6mph was a game changer for me along with opening the roof on the RF above 6mph.
Good luck with the rest of the mods and enjoy your trip

Based on the above sounds like you used Mazda tweaks for infotainment? I have one question… I have firmware version 70. I already have CarPlay installed. Did using any of the tweaks affect CarPlay?

I should also do the smarttop update for the retractable roof 6mph is annoying - what speed did you set the roof opening speed to?

I didn’t go as far as the full Mazda tweaks, just followed this to enable the touchscreen. CarPlay not affected and I can now acknowledge Waze alerts on the screen without fiddling with the controller.

I bought the MX5things controller and set the speed to 30mph.

I recently added the ignition controller so I could continue to listen to music when stopped or carry on with a phone call without having to keep the engine running. A happy bonus with this gizmo is that you can remotely open and close the roof with your key fob as long as the windows are up. Never thought I needed this until I started to use it.

Looks like a very similar approach to the Mazda tweaks. In fact you end up on the same user menu at some point I believe
Thanks for info!
