ND Marker Lights Sidelight Wiring Connection

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __RF ND2
  2. I’m based near: __Chichester
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Wiring

I have bought a set of marker lights and connectors. In order to tap into the front sidelights do I access the sidelight connector from in the wheel arch or under the bonnet ? Had a quick look under the bonnet and it seemed a bit busy and couldn`t see the connector. Thanks for your help. Geoff.

I have sent you a private message.

I also need this assistance.
Can you share the answer publicly?

I have sides connected (by previous owner), just come to replace due to two no longer working and discolouration to find some custom wiring. how do i get my hands on the OEM mazda connectors for the plug and play?

this is what i was expecting to see ^

this is what i have (below)

On the UK cars there does not appear to be the the facility to connect the side markers ‘plug and play’.

The wiring loom is not the same as the American one so you have to tap into the loom at the correct points and ‘make’ the connection to the lights.

I fitted these Bumper Reflector Set, US Spec, MX5 Mk4 – MX5 Parts which have removable normal bulbs and have a female socket for the wiring. There is no matching male on the cars loom. I improvised my own connection using heat shrink insulators.

I understand that some of the none Mazda ones have a short loom with the female socket on the end. (yours appears to be that type) If this is the case just cut the socket off and connect the live and earth that the old lights used to the tails you have just created.

I did a basic write up which shows how to connect the lights to the ND2. The big problem is finding where to tap into the loom on the front. As you already have the live and earth feeds to the marker lights it should be relatively straight forward to marry your new lights to the existing wires.

If you need ant further information please shout up.

I used Mazda RX-8 sidelight connectors/fitments l had a few going spare they fit perfect and fitted led lighting into the fitments…took the front wiring from the side light repeater’s from under the front wings… the back lights are from side lights…

thanks for the reply.

bear with me as my electrical knowledge is ‘connection connections to thingy connector’ rather than actual useful ‘typaA1 male into type 55 female connecter’

so ive been combing the internet looking for the right connection i need and i cant find anything. i keep finding dead ends, parts for the NB, or in a couple of cases i am finding exactly what i need - but its for a incandescent bulb (which requires purchase of a whole new set of markers!).

what i have:

  • side markers previously wired by someone else. so all 4 corners have the wiring needed into the mazda loom
  • 2x markers are broken (led bulb) hence the replacement
  • the old connection point is completely different to the new part i have, and also different to the other option the incandescent bulb/OEM U.S model. no idea what ive actually got fitted

what i ‘think’ i need

  • i can cut the red and black wire and reuse those (to the mazda loom).
  • the new markers i have are LED, and the connector is two pins, such as a typical incandescent bulb.
  • i need a bulb holder. (i cant find a part number, or name to search for correct housing type)
  • i also need the plug with some wiring length which will accept this bulb housing. (so i have enough wire length to splice it in) - also cant find part numbers or know what i need to buy.

i am at the point here where i am completely lost. ive tried bofi, mx5 parts, and mx5things and none can tell me what i need.
so, if anyone knows what i can do here please please can you just drop a URL link so i can add things to my shopping cart. i cant self-resolve this one.

image of the new ones i have, and the 2 pin connector below

this is the closest ive got - and the wiring i think i need. but ive honed mx5 parts and they dont sell these separately or know how to source.

to compare, they also sell the LED version (which i have) but sold without the harness (why???)

footnote… i had also found this. which i think would do it? its for an older mx5. but no longer available

The picture of the black plastic bit hanging out of the side-marker with red and black wires and two metal contacts emulates a standard bulb, and I’m guessing its a normal T10/W5W.

The shape of the hole in the side-marker looks very much like the standard profile for bayonet fixing (quarter turn) the bulb socket (now with “bulb”) into the side marker.

So any standard bulb socket for a T10/W5W will fit, and the one on a lead you showed in the next post is probably ideal. There will be more if you keep looking…

This marker with its own LEDs built-in neatly avoids the main problem where many of the LED bulbs sold as replacements for T10/W5W incandescents are longer, and might have fouled the outer lens of that slim side marker.

This pic is of a T15 when I was looking at reversing lamps, an extreme example.

And this is a selection of T10/W5W bulbs when I was comparing brightness, with enormous variations in heat and brightness, most are well avoided!

ive searched for T10. but, this looks like what i currently have fitted to the car…

am i just being daft? do i already have what i need?

(see post ##1 for my current fitment). look the same to me…

If you have bought a new side-marker it came with a bulb holder. Remove (part-turn anti-clockwise), unplug (pull), and and discard that part because it expects to mate with the Mazda loom, which is not there.

You want to end up with this. The dangly bit of plastic on the two wires is the equivalent of a “bulb” but it goes to the LEDs inside instead.

This “bulb” is hoping to meet one of these holders you found on Amazon

If you already have that bulb holder wired in the car it should fit the “bulb” hiding in the marker. In theory you are home free.

And of course that holder and “bulb” are then inserted into the marker, and locked in with a part-turn clockwise to keep the weather out.

BUT be aware some reviews on this type of holder suggest the rubber can deform with heavy handling and then the contacts might not make a good connection.

Good luck!

making headway on this today. i ended up re-fitting the blank colour coded inserts for a while until i was ready to fix someone elses bad homework

putting a little how-to together as im going through which may help others in future. i’ll set that as a findable thread shortly. until then, enjoy this blooper

re-wired one from scratch (working), the other i reused existing plug (which was working) turned out to be a loose connection / stretched. flicked on/off as i unmounted it post-video.

When using the bulb holders from the US spec side marker lights you can buy the proper tail connectors from a Mazda dealer.
They’re not cheap but do the job and they are waterproof.

wish i knew about these

added to shortlist. if i have any issues with the new fitment ill grab some. the e10 bulb holders dont seem great.
work. but not great
